I did a lot of reading on this subject years ago and studies have been done.
It is impossible for a bullet to come back down and land within a mile or so of the shooter.
The bullet immediately leaves it's tragectory once it clears the muzzel.
And by the time it again crosses it's own tragectory,( point blank range), it becomes subject to the atmosphere and the earths rotation.
There are many other factors involved that prevent that bullet from straight flight
Unless of course there happens to be a squib and it doesn't achieve it's full flight.
Or, the earth stops spinnin.
