Ok the start of my million questions...

first depth wise...does anyone know the difference to expect from the following coils..

x-5, x-8, and minelab 8 inch coil, also would like to know what the ounce weight is of each one...just got outbid on a x-8 on ebay...

Also it seems I will be able to get the minelab with the lower rod cheaper than an x-8 used....any thoughts on head on comparisions?

I sure can't give you a definitive answer. (Asked roughly the same first question not long ago.) But that Merc from last week I found at about 7" with the X-5 and it rang in loud and clear.

hey Greg as i have not tried the x8 coil i cant give a comparison however i do own the ml8 tho and have gotten wheat's and Indians at a little over 7 if that helps any at all

I would recommend the X-8 over the Minelab 8" coil. It is much lighter and performs the same or better.
I've owned both and can't see any advantages to using the Minelab coil.
I also own an X-5 and really can't guess how deep it can go in clean ground because I just use it in extremely heavy trash and iron.
It is awesome when it comes to picking between the iron or junk. It will help you find the tiny stuff too.

The Minelab 8 inch with rod weighs 1 lb. 6 oz. The Sunray 8 inch with rod weighs 1 lb. 3 oz.. I have both and just weighed them on my postal scale. So it is in fact just 3 oz lighter. I use both on and off and can really not see a performance difference in my soil. Both are great and will grab a target down to 7-8 inches which is as deep as items go around here. I would not hesitate to get a Minelab 8 inch if you find one, they are great performers. Also, the Sunray 12 inch with lower rod weighs 1 lb 9 oz Good for field hunting, but It is my least used. You will definately want to add a 5 inch to your collection it is incredible how it will surgically pick targets out of trashy areas, a real must have and I often find items at the 6-7 inch range with it also.

Greg, There all good coils, sunray, minelab, excelerator, I myself have a 5" for heavy trash excelerator, 8" minelab great depth, 12 1/2" sunray fields & beach, 18 "excelerator fields & beach. they all do the job. Good Luck

Gregg, Thinking you got the Minelab for MORE depth, a little over 7 inches isn't much deeper than what your DFX and stock coil, was giving you....wasn't it?? I would think a slightly larger coil, not a smaller coil, would be what you would want to get the deeper coins.
Just my observation.

Honestly...with the frozen ground and constant snow storms here...I have not even been able to find out what the depth of the stock coil is on the se yet in my area.... I am hopeful it can get 7 to 9 inches...the only time I used the se...my stock coil was very stable...I think I had a reading in the 8 inch area...but with the frozen ground could not dig that deep...if that signal was real...this se is going to be something! I will not need a bigger coil...just the smaller ones.... I would like to find a great deal on an x-5 and or the Minelab 8 inch with the lower shaft...but I am patient and...will wait for the right deal... Been watching/bidding on ebay...but I think I am going to have a few more interesting items to trade soon... Pretty much decided that is the way I am going..thanks...been making some behind the scenes moves/trades...obviously the biggest was the se purchase...also reading the digging deeper dfx book and the se manual at the same time has required lots of notes..in two separate binders...hopefully this will save me the time of having to ask the redundant questions that are asked on the se...some of the stuff is already sinking in The dfx found plenty of clad and probably will continue to for me...I just saw way to many good finds with explorers not to give one a shot...time will tell...side by side I will run them thru their paces and the best detector stays... ...now need winter to go bye bye...also...been getting a lot of e-mail support...especially from Gary...tons of charts and programs to go thru...:detecting:

Just my observation.[/quote] the 7 inches in depth is for the SMALL coil and it is used for TRASHY areas not raw depth ...if i wanted to get out of the trash and get DEEP then the stock coil or the x12 i own will get that job done and so...the depth issue between machines goes on........

You'll get much more out of the stock coin. I've dug signals that left a clear depth gauge many times. That supposedly is over 10".
Good luck when the frost is gone.
