OK Tejon,or Vaquero or Silver Umax

OK-I don't have a detector now.They are sold.
I live in the lake ontario area.
No salt water beaches just fresh water lakes all around.
Have read all about the Tejon is mineralized soil.
Some say the Umax with the bigger coil will keep up with the Vaquero.
I saw the videos on you tube where the Vaquero targeted at 49 centimeters and the tejon a whopping 70 centimeters.
I heard the Vaquero is much smother than the tejon. I think that in dry sand or wet fresh water beaches the tejon is going to be the killer.
If there is not much difference then I will get the Vaquero.
I am ready to buy today.

Howdy David

My pick would be none of the above if freash water detecting is being considered. A Tiger Shark underwater detector that can be used on land And uderwater would be the ticket in my book.
I have had a Tiger for nine yrs. and have used it hard during that time. Great detector..............Hombre

The Tejon for pure horsepower - with the Vaquero a close runner up. Either is better than the Silver due to the manual ground balance.

I sold my Tejon and kept my Vaquero and no regrets. In my mineralized soil the V is deeper and more stsble.

thanks-I was leaning towards the Vaquero anyway but was blown away by the you tube tejon video.
70 centimeters is awesome thats over 27" in the air.
I know it can't do that in the ground but I have seen other tests about other detectors and they don't even come close to 27 inches in the air and most are only half of that.
I will buy one of these by monday - it will probably be the Vaquero.

I don't know what is going on with those videos. But I think it's BS. I've got a tejon and a cibola. I have owned a vaquero and none of them would air test 49cm (19inches). The Tejon is deeper in my soil. The Vaquero is better in heavy trash. I like the features of the Tejon better. Both are good detectors

The Tejon is an excellent and deep detector, but don't believe the magic show.

It would take one BIG piece of metal to be detected at 27" with it.

Well i have had all three and liked them all, I guess if money is not a real issue then i opt for the vaquero with 5.75" coil the vaq to me i could hit on coins better and struggled to that with the tejon but if your relic hunting, by all means the tejon is the definate champ and the frequencys are different to between the both them which does make some difference on what your after, that's just my opinion anyway's

ok I am getting the vaquero but for those who don't believe it----seeing is believing.
Vaquero is in a different language but you can see the control settings.

The tejon is the same.

confusing isn't it.
The europeon models run on the same voltage as ours here in the good old U.S.don't they.
Anyway I would like to buy a detector from the forum but most Vaqueros are around $300 to $330 used.
When you don't have a detector you tend to rush into a buy sometimes.
Is it worth the extra $90 to get a new one-I know the tesoro life time offer but isn't that just for the original owner.
I am hearing about the high tone vaquero now also.
the more you read the more confusing it gets.
thanks

No, David, seeing is not believing. You know anyone who can air test a coin that far with a Tejon or Vaquero?

Of course you don't. I know at least one of these videos was discussed a while back.

You can't see what's on the other side when the coin is being waved.

It's called sleight of hand, and it's how magicians make a living.

PS - Don't send any money to any deposed African princes that email you. And don't give your online passwords to anyone who emails you that your account has been compromised.

I think you would be happy with either the Tejon or Vaquero - as long as you don't expect what you're seeing in that video!

If you search this forum for Sven, he has a link in his signature block to his web page. On his web page he has air tests for the Cibola and Tejon with various detector settings.

I have not gone through all the settings he has with air tests but for the settings I did test, both my Cibola and Tejon match his tests identically. Not any where near those videos, but very respectable, and more representative of what you might expect in ideal conditions if you happen to sweep the coil dead center over the types of targets used in the air tests in very sweet ground and are listening very intently.

When you decide you are going to get into the water to chase the rings that come off of shriveled wet fingers in the cold waters of lake Ontario ... I haven't used a Tiger Shark; but having almost dunked both my Cibola and CZ6a playing knee deep in the water before I got a water proof detector, I'd highly recommend a water proof detector like the Tiger Shark for fresh water beach use. The Tiger Shark is very highly regarded in and near fresh water. Since the near dunks, I've picked up a CZ20 and a Sand Shark to play near and in the water with (nearly all salt water for me). Knowing you can get the detector wet and not worry about it is worth the higher price for me.
Cheers,
tvr

African princess, yeah right.
Just wondered what the reaction would be.
Never heard of any detector that could go that deep.
I should know I had the tejon and sold it but the videos seem to blend in with all the other baloney sometimes .
quarters at 20" on the beach and even deeper reported.
Thanks
David

Holy cow! My Tejon and Vaquero must really be defective.

I bought a coil (5.75) with a long cord and mounted the control box of my Vaquero on a hard hat, makes a good water hunter. (just don;t fall down) The speaker is close to the ears so phones are optional.

Hi There
The Vaq goes deep very deep in all metal mode, ive hit Cans/Parts of cans in sand at 26inches/with a tape to measure,
Think the Tejon would be deeper but only by a couple of inches, not sure about air tests, depth /Size of target Etc you have to take into account,

Just for that I went out and bought a new "CIBOLA"
If I don't like it then I will get a Vaquero.I had the tejon and sold it a few years ago.I had three detectors at the time.
The Eagle Spectrum,MXT and the Tejon with the extra shaft and small coil.
I think it was a 5" coil. Prices have come down.
I bought it from someone in the forum for $500 and it was really chatty .
It went up for sale for $500 and sold in a flash. I sold the spectrum and the MXT also.
Now I have the time, maybe I won't get out everyday but I will do a heck of a lot more detecting now
than I did back then..
I will not sell this one.
Maybe try it for awhile and if I can't get enough or if I want to experiment with it I will install the 10 turn pot on it and the switch.
But for now thanks for all of the answers.
This forum is great.
I will try and post what I find with the Cibola.
You guys have been great.

For what it's worth I love my Vaq more and more with each use.
Thoe it hasn't quite replaced my XLT.
Just my 2cents

You're right about the Tejon. It is chattier than most other detectors by design. The Tejon does not totally reject iron, instead it gives what I'd describe as a broken sound. The advantage to that is good targets are much less likely to be masked by adjacent iron.

Good luck, David, hope you find a lot of great stuff with that Cibola!
