The sounds this thing makes is crazy lol but when the safari nulls out will it still alert to a good target? High trash areas are killing me lol first day out found a 1950 wheat penny tid of 38? (I know stop looking at the display and listen to the sounds lol)

Sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow down in trashy areas. Give the computer time to work. Sweeping from a different direction helps too. As you get a better feel for it, you can speed up but slow is fast while you are learning your new machine.

(I know you know these things, but also realize encouragement helps when you start a new machine. and YES, Tones/Sounds are the key!)

oh i know lol i just like being sarcastic:p and i learned alot today actually. i dug every good signal... its how i learn whats what. im not big on test gardens or air tests.. to me it seems like targets in ground awhile behave totaly diffrent then fresh in the dirt or in the air... to my way of thinking you hafta dig the trash to understand what trash is lol... i have that military attitude that everything is written in blood and since every area is different i take some stock in what people say but ultimatly its dependent on what you do not what you hear.. i do value information and opinions tho. i thinnk that those who have more time on the machine can be a great deal of help but nobody can know everything... even the people that designed it cant tell me exactly how the detector is going to work in my area.............................and yes i figured the slow thing down lol im used to a vlf and man i was shocked at what this thing was picking up.. i think its recovery time is great but in high trash aeas i found my self going over the same areas multiple times just to make sure i wasnt going to fast.................... any idea obout pinpointing? not used to the double d coil.. is it when full bars and squel that its under shaft mount or front of coil?

Ignore the display when pinpointing. Again, use the sound. Remember that you are detecting a 1" strip on a DD. Do the 'X' thing and where they intersect is where the magic is. Personally, I make an asterisk instead of an X as a DD seems to sometimes be off an inch or so to the rear. 3 axes seem to pin it down a bit better for me.

Also learn the DD wiggle to pinpoint. Do it both ways and you've pretty well nailed it.

Yq I do the x I just wasnt for sure on the intersection the coil uses as its actual detection spot. Some coils are diffrent but thanks you ;)

Mine is a 6x8 SEF fwiw. I have heard others also say the X is off by an inch towards the base(closest to you). It may just be a hand/eye perception thing.

it may be. i played around with mine today (stock coil) and got to the point i could get it right under the shaft and coil joint. its hard to tell if the coil is not level with the ground... distortion maybe i dunno

There is one particular park where I like to detect but it is infested with everything. Old ring pulls, new ring pulls, tabs, (they all give different sounds in the gold range!!! nails, aluminum can slaw, old rusty nuts and bolts, buried sprinklers heads that will give you a sweet sounding solid 39!. You think you have silver but after you dig a 4-5inch hole, there it is, another *!#%! buried sprinkler head!!! Anyway, all I can do is put on the smallest coil (6inch Excellerator) and what I do is tilt the coil at a 45 degree angle and approach the target at different angles. Andy Sabich mentioned this effective method a long time ago and I have adopted this tip. It works to narrow and single out the spot where a GOOD sounding target is if there is a lot of junk around that particular good target and is wanting to null your metal detector out. There is no 100% surefire method and it's all about what works for the individual.

I thought haveing the coil cocked off and not parallel to the ground increased falsing ? Id this only acurate with vlf detectors?

If you reference Andy's book "The Minelab Quattro & Safari Handbook" on page 29 you'll find the technique. He went on to say that...quote "A few years ago, 'Doc' Lousignont demonstrated this technique to a packed room full of Minelab dealers in Las Vegas, many of whom had never seen it in practice"....unquote. It really aids in pinpointing so you may want to get the book which gives a better description of how that is performed with Double D coils.
