OK pirates, lets start a little headphone thread here........

Am thinking seriously about having Minelab hardwire a set of Gray Ghost Underwater headphones on the Excal. Who runs them and why do you use them? Is there any better performing headphones, than these? I need submersibles, as ya'll know how I am. I am lobble to stand on my head out there, ya know? GH

get them to add female plug to excal. and add male plug to your excal phones

that way u have two sets and can change when your heart desires

Hardwiring works for me Max. Why would I want to swap them out, if they are the bomb anyway? I do not want any leaks or potential leaks. Leaks have already wrecked my GQA2 once. No more non-hardwired units for me! GH

G'day GH....

I changed my stock blue Excal phones over to the Grayghost phones mainly because the Excal phones were constantly being washed off my head from waves and when dropping underwater to fan for targets. I think the audio on the GG phones gives a smoother audio and better insulation from the wind and waves but I don't think it's a big difference in this area. The GG phones fit much firmer around the head and stay put after being hit from waves and when you dive down. The Excal ear cups are too big and as you probably know, when you go underwater they are too buoyant until the cups fill with water....the GG phones are smaller in this area and ducking under the water isn't a problem. IMHO, comfort and fit are much better on the GG and audio is probably slightly more "satisfying". I'd be lying to say that the GG audio allows for better target ID, etc. I bought them almost solely so they wouldn't wash off from waves and going under quickly. I had Minelab Australia hardwire and resin set a matching end connector that simply slides into the Excal main body.....very simple to remove and replace.
My old Excal headphones are now on my waterproofed Goldquest SS which I know only use when there is black sands present....generally my local beaches down here are postcard white and free of minerals.
My #1 machine is the Aquasound with the Excal as back up.
I actually went to the beach today for some winter wet sand detecting and was using the Goldquest SS and I found the Excal phones to have a perfectly adequate audio.
Just to confuse things even more......the headphones on the Aquasound are Viking V1...these are superior to the phones I just mentioned.....great audio....very comfortable...stay put.....feel really well made. I don't know their origins...you'd need to contact Mr.Gold on the "other" detecting site to maybe get some more info.

Hope some of this info is of use to you,
Have a good summer...plenty of gold,
Regards,
Tony..Perth, Aust.

PS....Here's a photo of my 3 top mates....the wife knows she is 4th

GH,

Those Ikelite connectors that Max uses are very good but at the end of the day it's 2 more areas that saltwater can get to (male and female connector).....I think you must take care to rinse with freshwater well and then dry carefully after they are separated....just as this is the case with the Excal battery connection. Yep, I like to hardwire as well.

Tony.

GH,

This is what the phones look like after coming back from Minelab.

Labour and parts was about $50.

As you can see from the photo (click on it for a larger view), only black and white wires are needed with the red not needed.

Tony.

But the Grey Ghosts keep our ears warmer during the icey cold winter months when we hunt the lane. They are great for keeping out the winter's biting wind.

Wow...now I like THAT! I think when the Fall/Winter land hunting season gets here my Excal will be making the trip to Minelab to get that done. I already use the Grey Ghosts for my land machines and like them a lot.

The Grey Ghosts are incredible!!!! The sound differentiation is quite good. You'll dig less trash....But, the down side is that the Connector as shown is meant for a larger wire than is on the headphones..... this breaks the small guage wires as it allows too much movement. Also keep in mind that there is no stress relief on the connector so somehow you should think this out before you do it.

I spoke with Gary Storm ( original Excal mfr. ) recently and he basically said that the only way to contol the headphone connector assembly is do it yourself. Let Minelab put the battery style connector on your control unit and you do the rest,

I like it because I take them off after every use. I broke two sets of headphone wires by them falling away from the units will I was carrying them (Dumb) so this is a nice option for me.

Howdy Tony, thanks for the info, very informative. I wish the Aquasound would work in Galveston, but we are infested with black sand here! I am pretty sure about going with the Gray Ghosts and love yer hardware mate! GH
