I have just started MDing :twodetecting:and I don't seem to be doing as well as you guys.
First of all my wife just makes fun of me :rofl:and my little boy dreams of finding anything worth value. She just laughs at what I have brought home so far.

The first time I went out, I started in the yard.
After a few hours I came in with a fishing sinker, broken pipe, a brass hook.:pulltab:
My wife just roared.

The next time I took it with me to the beach in Long Island.
I only spent 45 minutes on the beach but came back with a martini shaker and a lot of trash.:pulltab:
I got more ribbing.:lmfao:

I decided I needed more education.
I read the book again.
I also got a DVD on how to detect.
Best 20 buck I spent.
I learned a lot from that DVD.

With my new found knowledge I went to the beach by my house.
I got there at 9:30 am.
Too late, the beach was already filling up.
I decided to try the next day earlier.

The next morning I got up and headed to the beach.
It was 6:30am when I arrived.
No one was there.:clapping:
I went to my truck to grab the detector:garrett:, pouch, and sand scoop, and headed back to the empty beach.
I thought of all the coins, jewelry and gold I would find.

Just as I was walking on to the beach a small tractor zipped by me from the NYC Parks Department.
Attached on the back of the tractor was a "BEACH CLEANER".
This device had a 8' sand sifter and was cleaning the beach.
It has teeth like a comb that went at least 8 inches deep into the sand removing anything and everything from the sand an dumping it into the back of this machine..:rage:..I should have bought one of those. Someone is making out.

I couldn't believe it.
I thought "WTF"
Then I saw that the tractor could not do below the water line and since I was out here already, might as well try again.

I dodged the tractor and headed for the water.
After 20 minutes I found my very first coin.
A penny
date????
1978
Oh and its Canadian.
Well at least I found a coin.

I spend another 3 hours and came home with a total of 57 cents.
All current dates but I found something.
At least I know the thing works.

I walked in the door to my house.
Showed her my findings.
She just laughed and laughed and laughed.

I keep reading the stories here and in the mags.

I still have hope that some day I will come home and she will be floored by the gold ring I find.:surprised:

Still trying
CrazyLes

Crazyles,
Nobody understands....... What detector are you using in the wet sand? Do you have a long handled scoop? This will help you dig more targets per hour. If your running your detector in the coin mode then you will be missing most of the Jewelry. Run in the all metal mode or set it to just knock out the small iron. Usually just the first notch.

I have a GTI 2500
I run it in coin and jewlery mode
Yes I have a long handle scoop

Don't even think about what she is doing ,after you show her the gold ring that you WILL find just laugh at her and see what look she gives you then .
But seriously my wife frowned on this too, she said give it 2 months and that thing will be in the closet like all the rest of your toys but I am still at it 5 months later and now she wants a machine.

So there is hope for our wives, we just have to be patient with them.

Does you wife color her hair? Does she get her nails done? Is there ANYTHING you can use as leverage? If not just tell her that man has for hundreds of thousands of years been hunters and gatherers. Finding food, stones and raw ore to smelt. Tell he having a metal detector only speeds up the process!

Go to the beach at 5pm. when the crowds start to leave and beat the beach cleaner to the loot. I have MD at that time a lot and it works.

Go to the beach in the EVENING

Most beach cleaners dont pick up coins and rings. Hang in there.

Go elsewhere: schools, parks, FRESHWATER BEACHES, vacant lots, athletic fields, etc.

Practice. Test your detector with lots of targets. See how they react.

Hang in there - you WILL find a lot of trash... go here and see what I mean:

For every good find there is some trash to balance it. Get to know your trash - - become one with your trash.

Remind your wife that she is supposed to support you. Thats what partners do. They hate that guilt stuff...

Thanks everyone for your support
I am learning that these devices do take some skill and practice
They are not the turn it on and go as most people think

As for my wife, I deserve the ribbing, I guess, for all the years she has put up with me:devil:

Still learning and swinging low an slow

Hey we all started the same way bud. We weren't born Pro's. Wait till you find a nice woman's ring then tell wifey you're going to peddle it on Ebay and watch her sing a different tune. From then on she'll be pushing you out the door to go tecting.:)

Bill

Yeah before she was struck down with MS my wife was my hunting partner. She loved it and really misses it. She found a lot of good stuff.

Bill

That will take some hunting. I told her about your post and she mentioned a Black Hills Gold ring she found in the yard of Doc Sevrenson's Mom's house here in Portland. Remember him - Johnny Carson's bandleader for all those years on TV. She and my wife were friends. Like me her stuff is scattered all over the house. I'll see if I can scrounge some of it up.

Bill

Yer killing me...
I think it's the image in my head of the
wife ROFL..
Kinda like a cat that drags home a rat, but
finds the owner is not overly pleased to have a
stinking carcass in the house with them.. :stars:
But on the serious side, I don't find near as much
stuff as some of these guys do. I hardly get time to
detect lately... :sadwalk: So my overall finds are kinda
puny.. But...I have already paid for my machine..
It'll happen.. Just takes a while.
But in my case, the payoff was fast and pretty much
one shot. I used it to find lot marker pins, and was
able to avoid hiring a surveyor.. Paid for my machine
in one quick swat. :super:
I'm real meager in the old silver dept.. Mainly cuz I
don't get around the right places very often.
I take it with me to OK, but all I find are bullets..
Bullet after bullet after bullet after bullet after bullet.
Whoever had that property before me was one shooting
fool. And all are the same type slugs from the same gun
pretty much.. Pretty big bore too.. I gotta a whole
slew of them thangs in my car trunk..
So...Don't think everyone around here is hauling it in
all the time.. I've been slacking lately.. But.. I am
in my busy season at work.. I play tecter more in the
winter. And try to avoid the big :pulltab:..

G'day Les.
Sounds like you are doing better than I did when I first started out. I was starting to question my sanity after a while, 'cause I couldn't find a thing apart from junk. After 6 hours, I finally found a 5 cent piece. Never thought That it was possible to get excited about such a small find, but I did. The next find still took a while, but I gradually improved from there.
This is a new skill that you are learning, so go easy on yourself and with practice, you will succeed. If the wife want go easy on you, then I can remind you, that gaffer tape was invented for a reason!
Something that you might want to try at home, is grab some coins and some of the junk that you have found and either waive them over the coil, or the coil over them. That way it will help you to understand what the detector is telling you. Also practice pinpointing on targets that you can see, so that you know where to find them under the coil when you are out hunting.
Good luck and enjoy.
Mick Evans.

There is a saying in fishing. There are only two types of people that never get skunked. People that don't fish and liars. I think the same applies to metal detecting. Stay with it. The good finds will come.

Crazyles,
Stick with it buddy.
It's just a matter of time,we are very sure you will get your gold ring and that will only be the first of many.
Hey, we all had to start at one time and I'm sure like Eileen and myself everyone on this forum went thru the same. Be patient and the rewards will come.
