I just got an explorer xs and after a quick glance at the instuction book (I know...) I was off. The trouble is I feel like I am following the Pied Piper with all of the tones.I have found that I should just hit the easy chair with a good book(like the instuctions)and start slow. Do coins mostly hit with a high tone? What should I be listening for? I have managed to find some wheat cents and a silver ring, but i still can't make sense of what the explorer is telling me.

It's like learning music. You have to develope an ear for it. Toss some coins on the ground and listen to the tones the different ones make. You'll hear the differences.
If the tone is high and the crosshair paritialy off the screen in the upper right in smart mode it's good stuff.
I would suggest going into audio, tones and change the Variability to max. That way the good coins will have a very distint high tone different from pennies.

I had a friend who sold his Explorer after a couple of weeks because he couldn't stand all the tones. He was used to the single tones of his XLT. I, too, converted from the XLT. It doesn't take all that long to get used to it, but, once you do, you will never want to hunt in single tone again. In fact, you can change to Explorer to single tone, but nobody does.

You might try adjusting the "variability" or the "limits" controls to lower numbers to cut down on the information that the explorer is giving you. When you are comfortable you can add more information(variability or limits).

I think the easiest thing to do, is set the response to fast only, variable tones to 10, and gain leave at 5. if you must run a pattern, then clear the screen and reject only nails, crown caps and round tabs.. then sweep slowly and listen for high tones, when you get one reading in the coin area of the meter circle it while sweeping with little left to right motion and see if the tone remains steady and the same.. most good targets at least by themselves read very solid and steady toned.. crap usually will warble and change tone from one angle to another.. after getting used to it you can go after the iffier ones that may be on edge or near junk

I posted the same question on here when i first got mine. After a couple of times out, it starts to become clear. This machine makes you slow down to hear the different sounds on different targets. I love this machine.

I am going to put these ideas to work.
Sure I will have more questions.
Thanks to all
