Just how imprortant is the threshold to my explorer xs, why I'm asking this is at almost everywhere around here it is almost impossible to get a threshold without going into the single digits on sencitivity(spelling) . I'm new to this machine but not to detecting one month with the explorer and I love the limited finds so far but it is giving me a headache too I'm stubborn so I won't be giving it the old toss anytime soon just want some gratification with it NOW
Thanks and Best Regards,

Hmmm...that sounds strange. I have mine set at 7 and I can hear it most of the time when the sensitivity is at 32. Maybe you have it set up with too much discrimination. You could try iron mask at -10 for starters.
Hope that helps ,

You mean you can turn your threshold all the way down and you still hear the machine chirping away as you swing it?

In certain highly mineralized soil, the threshold may just null out all the time.
Don't be afraid to hunt in iron mask set at zero. You will still find most of the US coins. I don't get to excited about hearing no threshold anyway.
Leave your sensitivity up as I don't believe it affects the threshold at all. Only lower your sensitivity if you get static or unstable tones. I usually hunt in Manual mode but if it gets staticy, I switch and that usually clears it up.
IMHO

You need to send it in for service or take the cover screws out and see if the plugs are down all the way or if a pin is bent it could save hunting time, good luck rufus!!

Next time it is acting really quirky with the threshold dropping out. Kick iron mask all the way down to -16 and see if you are hearing ferrous and discriminated targets where the nulls are. On an explore if a target hits in the black area of your screen you are going to loose threshold while you pass over that discriminated target. If your getting falsing (loss of theshold) at Iron Mask -16 with no target tones there is somthing weird, should be nothing but threshold and tones.
