Ok--Identifying steel beer caps:

In my post of the 15th I said I thought I had found a way to ID those pesky steel beer caps that give nice positive readings anywhere from low + to high positive numbers that seem related to the distance/strength of signal.
Here's what I accidently discovered down at the river that day and have since been able to repeat-- try it with an air test for quick confirmation (ground lock is fine for the air test):
When swinging left right or any line that goes thru the coil edge to edge and thru the center, you will usually get a high tone if in relic or you'll get the usual beep in C/J mode & both show a pos VDI that can range from 0 to about mid 70s.
Now to get around this, picture where the target is , move the coil to either side and just bring the edge to the target- doesn't matter if it's the concentric or the narrow dimension edge of the elliptical or the edrge on the long axis and you will get a LOW tone in relic with the trigger forward with or without Disc (of course! it's steel) and a negative VDI -about -63 and the word IRON. You can vary it with trigge in neutral in relic or set in CJ and you still get the neg VDI and IRON. I prefer Relic-Trigger forward, no disc for most hunting, but some disc works OK too. Try it, you might just like it. Oh--and it seems to work ok on a pocket knife- like a Case knife, but fails at axe head mass (reads 0+).
Hope it makes a difference next trip out. Now...if I could get it to work on aluminum.
HH that steel...or not...

Thank's for the tip. I went to the beach yesterday for about 30 minutes before it started to rain. It worked just as you said. That sure helps not do dig so many screw tops.
