First let me say I want to buy a Exp.ll but first I need to know which one of the smaller coils work best on the Exp.ll for jewlery hunting and iron trash hunting. The three coils I am considering are the M/L 7.5", Sunray 8", The Joey 5x10. The hunting factors that are important to me and my style of hunting. 1.Sensitivity to GOLD Jewlery. 2.Stability 3.Seperation in the trash. 4.Depth. Without this information I can't justify the $975 for a new Exp.ll as the 10" coil will do me no good except when I am on a salt water beach. I am not worried about the time it takes to learn the machine as I am a patient person when I am doing what I like to do. Thank you for you help in advance. Jerry aka Tinfoil

Hey Jerry,
1. The machine is sensitive to gold because there was a dude that was posting on Shaner's Page (http://groups.msn.com/MinelabExplorerXSusers) who was searching beaches in Japan. He found loads of gold and platinum rings. You can check that forum to see all the pictures and his posts. His name was Shane (not Shaner). Two different guys. Ask Shane what coil he was using.
2. I'm not really sure what instability is. My guess it is sensitivity to electronic equipment and other detectors. The XS2 has a noise cancel button that causes the machine to check thru 11 different operating channels to pick the quietest one to operate from. It works great around other detectors and electric lines. I have used both the 7.5" minelab and the stock 10.5" and this is the case.
3. The 7.5" minelab coil is great with separation in trash. I have used it many times where trash items were as close as 3" apart and probably closer. In clean areas, I have found pennies at 9 inches with this coil. Of course the depth of the trash layer will affect how deep the machine will go. For example, if you have a dense layer of trash at 5 inches, you will probably be able to get 6 inches deep maybe, but you will not hear the stuff at 9 inches. Or at least that is my interpretation of what is going on. I also know people who use the stock 10.5 coil in trashy areas and do well with it. I myself use it in trashy areas now and do well with separating targets.
I think that you will be very happy if you get the Explorer. Don't expect an instant miracle though. But since you have the patience to put the time into learning the sounds (that's the key) it sounds like you will do just fine. Just make sure that you do exactly what the experts on this forum and on Shaner's forum tell you to do.
In my opinion, the best coil to learn with is the 7.5" minelab coil. Another absolute neccesity is the Sunray X1 target probe. The probe helps you find objects quickley, minimizes the time you spend digging the hole, and minimizes the size of your hole. This probe decreases the amount of time you must spend in order to learn the sounds because it minimizes the time it takes to dig holes and find out what you are listening to. The experts say get the X1 probe, so you better do it. We will set you up with some good machine settings and will tell you how you should swing your coil.

I think you would be suprised how sensitive the stock coil is to small targets and how well it works in iron.. although a smaller coil may do better in extreme iron.. however not being a jewelry hunter I cant say for sure how sensitive to small gold.. Its also hard for me to say which coil is the most sensitive to the smallets items as I have found some very small targets with all.. including the X12...I can say for sure the X8 is probably the most stable, as far as falsing goes... they all run fairly stable at the right sensitivity settings

This was a good question it got alot of hits but only a very few that were able to post a answer so that means to me that no one on the two forums knows the real answer. I really do appreciate the replies to my post from you guys that tried to help. BTW Rick N.D. who I have talked with before a few times says that he thinks the Sunray 8" on the Exp. is the most stable but no one can tell me which is the most senstive to the gold jewlery. If I do decide to buy the Exp.ll I probly end up with all three coils and sell off the ones that I don't like and don't work for me. I had a Sov 2apro that I never could get more then 8" out of and a good ID. I used the 7.5, 8" sunray, and the Sunray 5" coil and the sunray 8" on the 2apro was very unstable numbers jumped around all over the place even with precise pinpointing and I sent it back to the dealer and got the 7.5 and it worked great and was more sensitive to the gold then the sunray and even more sensitive then the 5" sunray coil and never could get more then 5 to 6"s out of the 5" sunray coil. Now this was on the sov.2apro. I was wondering if the Exp.ll was any different and it seems like two guys say the sunray 8 is and 2 say the 7.5 is. No one has said anything about the sensitivity to the gold Jewlery. I guess I will just have to buy all three and find out for myself like everything else. Thanks to the guys that did reply to the hard post. Later and May All Your Days Be Filled With GOLD .Jerry aka Tinfoil
