Been debating over detectors for a backup to my Etrac that would be light in weight and "fun" to use. Almost went with the Xterra 705 because I had one before and do think it's a great machine but always wanted to try a beep-and-dig machine. In this line I was really torn between the Vaquero and Tejon. Although it seems most Vaquero users don't use their pinpoint feature, I do prefer it. With my disability, I would not be able to do the pinpoint feature on the Vaquero but would on the Tejon so I bought a used Tejon from Rich at Backwoods Detectors. I know the frequencies are different and some say the Tejon is more noisy but I heard that about the MXT's and didn't have that problem with the one I had. I mostly coin and jewelry hunt so what are your thoughts?

You should do fine. Practice adjusting the double discrimination settings to give you clear zones of probable trash discrimination and probable good target acceptance and you'll hardly miss a TID screen. Of course the suggestions against using too much discrimination still apply as they do to any detector.

I had the Tejon and sold it with so many detectors. The Tejon is the only one I miss, it is an excellent detector!

I also have a use Tejon coming, so we are in the same boat. Wish it was here today it's 65 degrees outside.

Yep, its a good machine. Its my primary machine right now. The best advice I can give someone just getting one is to have patience and learn it. Its a bit unlike anything you've probably used up this point, as its a high-gain, run on the ragged edge kind of machine. A real good way to learn how yours behaves is to have a target garden (be sure you have targets that are at 8", 9", 9.5", and 10" to test the limits) and experiment with different settings and with the ground balance. I've found in some cases running a little negative on gb works better with my machine and sometimes getting it dead neutral works better. Also, the pinpoint is a motion pinpoint, but if you pratice just a little without pulling the trigger into pinpoint I think you'll find that it will pinpoint pretty accurate without it.

I think you are going to need a ton of patience.

Good luck,

Mike
