I bought this garrett on e-bay. It was worth it for the books, case, and phones, well atleast it was to me. It has no tone, any ideas? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9742474882&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

ever made. I was fortunate to have purchased one of the original Groundhogs, back in the 70's. I had a Garrett dealership back then, and visited with Charles Garrett on several occassions concerning the Groundhog. I'll tell you what.... that combination of VLF / TR was unbelievable. Once we implemented my reverse discrimination process, it was lethal!! You simply wouldn't believe the number of old silver coins and IH cents that my brother and I dug with our Groundhogs. To be honest, although I was a big fan of the original Groundhog, I didn't really like the toggle on the ADS model. Hunting with the earlier model, with that little pushbutton on the end of the handle, was "as good as it gets".
Anyway, back to your question, according to the ebay listing, the seller said that the speaker didn't work. But the needle moved. Did you try it with headphones?? I would suggest you give it a real good cleaning. Blow air through it and clean up the battery contacts. Get a copy of the manual and make sure you know how to set it up and use it. There are probably some guys out there that could take it a part and fix whatever is wrong. But before I did anything else, I would see if cleaning it might be all it needs. HH Randy

It hasn't made it here yet. He said there was no sound through the phones either. I did download and print the owners manual, but through some old posts I have read, I guess there is a small posibility that there is one battery bad. Although I still plan to get a Ace 250, I wanted a older Garrett machine too. Thanks for the input, Jonathan

I still have the none ADS with the pushbutton. I bought it second hand about 1980... still have it. Found a small gold nugget with it.

It was the first of a great series of machines. The latest being the Gold Stinger.
