OK. How many of you use quick mask predominately?

Lets hear how many guys with the E trac use the Quick mask screen predominately over the Discrimination patterns or Smart find set ups to hunt in. Or when you use the Quick Mask most, how and why.

I know I use it lots but mostly to check signals for iron. I will get a fair to med good hit and then push quick mast which I have set up with an almost clear screen to see if the number and curser are droping down into the iron range with the disc open. This tells me the signal I have is most likely iron and then I can descide to dig or not.

How bout all you?

Springs coming soon and Im getting syked,

I'm exactly the same way Utah! I run Andy's pattern most all the time and check with a near AM quickmask screen.

One thing that I really like to do, is on an extremley iffy signal is to also go into TTF with that top row blackend out (save for big silver) and listen there. I've also been "told" to dig by my machine that way when I could've swore it was falsing in conductive.

whilst i was learning the etrac i did used to switch to quickmask but after reading posts after posts and watching videos and digging rubbish to find out what the etrac was telling me i have settled on two tone ferrous with an open screen no discrim except for most of the top line and therefore i do not have to use quickmask at all as my screen is wide open and i dont get falsing i use a big 15 x 12 coil as i am on pasture most of the time.i have worked one paddock alot and am getting regular goodies at 8 inches to the bottom of the scale as i am working back in time georgian victorian 4 to 6 inches medieval 8 inches plus down i have to dig every high bleep in case it is something special without using quickmask the whole process does seem to be quicker good bleep dig recover instead of all that wondering i can tell you guys that if the etrac gives me a good signal it is never wrong there is always something down there which i hunt out with the aid of my garrett pro pointer everybody works the etrac differently it is very indivdual but once you have a really good system and are getting the goodies you tend to stick with it happy hunting you guys

Hey sugar,
You fellas over the pond have so many different ages and typs of goodies that I can see ttf working really good for ya. Here in the states (especially my state) the goodies are not near that varied. Of course I say that but there are a few spots that that method works ok but I like the multi tone and have gotten used to it.

Thanks,

Hey Neb,

What do you mean "told to dig that way" do you mean told to hunt that way? or told to check the machine that way? Just didnt understand what you ment. Thanks for all your great info bro.

be good,

The signal. I could definitely hear the high mixed in with the low and have good Co #'s, though the Fe's were terrible - like 27. Just a curiosity I had and tried it on several occasions and I go back to it from time to time...ESPECIALLY when I'm in an area that has produced a good many keepers.

I use quick mask only to check iffy signals, and if I still cannot decide, I will use TTF to help me decide whether it is a non ferrous item before I dig for sure

I use quickmask AM to check iffies in conductive sounds... if the signal clears up and registers a steady 31-35 fe then I don't dig unless I'm looking for relics or expecting a cache... but if the #'s bounce into the twenties or even teens while circling the target with a tight sweep pattern...DIG

If depth indicator is saying shallow coin/target then I crank sens max, use X-1 probe QM AM... its like a super mini coil and can isolate (shallow) targets and I D more accurately.

QM is a must for me and gets used a lot, especially in trash and for iffies..

Thanks Goes,
Yeah I am about the same wth the Quick Mask use but I have been wondering if that is the same for everyone. So far I see only relic hunters and over the pond folks are using mainly the QM mode to hunt in for the wide open screen.

Thanks Mc Dean,
I like your use of the probe to pinpoint the shallow coins. Mostly Zincs eh? good luck bro.

utahshovelhead.

I use minimal quickmask, a couple of bars, just enough for tiny iron pieces. I never use the programs or patterns. I beach hunt 99% of the time so its probably easier doing that than land hunting. I dont have to switch to anything else to decide to dig, if it sounds about the right size and tone I dig, even if the meter doesnt back that up. excellent depth and seperation this way:thumbup:

neil,
excellent post. That is exactly what I was wondering about. I wondered if anyone used it like that as their regular way to hunt. I ran that way kind of by accident one day when I forgot to toggle back out of my quick mask screen. I switched back to my open pattern but have been contimplating on what the reason would be that I might want to just hunt in Quick mask.
Are you useing multi sounds or set up the sounds like the TTF set up (are you in ferrous)?

Thanks for you input.

I wonder if any other beach hunters use the E that way?

sent you a pm on this.
I use the preset tones, the multi tones, very close in sound to the Explorer which I know well. I think disc deteriorates a signal, have checked many deep signals found hunting with no disc or very little disc and checked with more disc added in, never does any good for the signal, never made a signal better.
years ago I hunted a sov mostly in disc but O disc, now mostly hunt that in all metal and my F75 as well, all metal motion for that. I think theres a better feel for the ground and target and less chance of messing up/masking a signal. again I beach hunt so its easier to do I would imagine than hunting parks and such.

It's pretty straight forward - use the quickmask (all metal) to further investigate targets that are not obvious ones.

For example, rusty iron likes to jump up to diggable signals, and back down again. If you have any kind of iron discrimination, the only clue you have that it might not be a good target is that you don't have a signal both ways while sweeping your coil over the target. Simply use your quickmask and scan the target again. In the case of rusty iron, it will always chime both ways, with occasional chirps higher on the scale.

Other times, if I am in a new area (usually do woods) and it seems pretty quiet, I will hit the quickmask mode and keep it in all metal so I don't miss any clues.
