nothing mixed in the hole with this one.
9-10" deep.
stock coil.
hits in the top left corner of the IM screen, right at IM-14. i work it, and can only get it to bounce to top middle of the smartscreen. that's as far right as it will go.
i'm in conduct sounds. it sounds great with solid, consistent, and repeatable bangs.
in digital it's at like 30-29 bouncing to like 16-29.
would you dig it?
it has iron written all over it, right?
what would it sound like in ferrous?

I see in both your posts conduct was constant while ferrous moved. Both let out a high pitched sound.
Since I started hunting using the digital screen and Iron Mask -10 I probably would have not dug either.
Thanks for the posts..looks like a valuable lesson here telling me to dig all solid signals.

it's not perfect, but fairly accurate to about 6" deep.
it's after that 6" depth that signals really start flying around all over the place.
that's what you have to watch for, because when the targets get deep, they'll id funny.
i actually use digital to id on shallow targets. then, the smartscreen on the deepies, and watch how they act on the smartscreen for clues.

First of all am a silver coin hunter and use a XS in Conduct which does not give me a 29 only a 28-30...A constant
number in this area is indicative of a clad dime and above or a silver coin. Even at 10 inch depth digital numbers seem to be quite constant. As far as tone both iron and silver coins give a high tone but to a trained ear the iron is more harsher and your variability setting can help greatly in this aspect.Crosshair screen usually bounces around. Can't answer your question as I wasn't there but using the three facets..Digital is constant, sounded good and watching the crosshair screen although jumpy it will usually give you clues if target is near junk. Come to think of it would have dug getting a constant digital reading, good repeatable signal would have been enough even without looking at the crosshair screen which would have probably also helped knowing how the crosshair moved..We have 3 ways to tell plus perhaps a gut feeling and if the object was in an area of no junk perhaps all would have been right on. Remember your detector is not perfect but with experience the operator can evaluate the responses to dig or not to dig...As far as Ferrous started with Conduct and it worked for me so I never looked back cause don't fix what aint broke...

if they came out with an xsIII, i'd probably be the first to buy one.
dan, i know what your saying.
most iron is knocked out by the explorer sounds. it's high screeching, and if you sweep over it enough times, it loads up and the signal dissappears.
but, there's those pesky iron nails that DO sound just like silver sometimes. the smartscreen will show these though in the top left corner. IM-14 knocks most of them out.
i think we have 4 ways to tell. my fourth way is the depth meter. because if the target is shallow, it will more than likely id correctly. but, if it's deep, it'll be all over the place, and that's a clue right there, and gets me to dig or not.
if you're using the xs in digital, you won't see the ferrous number jumping all over the place to the left.
if you're using the smartscreen, you'll see it though.

For one thing never saw a unit work so well set so many different ways...I am sure we all have different hearing( at 66 mine isn't the best but my hearing of tones seems to be excellent) of course different ground and we all hunt a little different so indeed the changeable facets we can setup to our preferences. Indeed depth is a factor and many set the gain to tell right away, but I keep the gain at 10 lest I miss a deepie audio response..I guess its setup to your preference and weather permitting go for it.. Indeed no special or secret setup just one that works for an individual..Of course nice to kick around the facets as in this hobby can never learn enough..

I think I'd be one of the ones to dig it. I use ferrous and if I get a high tone that's near the bottom of my depth gauge, and if I get my last two numbers to hit 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 I usually dig it. Especially a deep jumper that would hit 16-29. I've even dug some good deep targets that read 31-28 and 00-15. I really think the tone is the key. I probably dig more trash than the average person.
My Motto is " When in Doubt, Dig it out". <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">
