New member
I have used a excal for years new but had to sale my last one
I got a X-70 on a trade and have been told at the salt water beach
that is it better then the Excal ??????...
what setting should I use there?..
has everyone have used a x-70 in the wet sand at a beach?
how did the X-70 do ???
can i get the coil wet ?

I may end up asking to trade the x-70 for a Excal..

Morris I tried the Xterra 70 at the salt water beach and it didn't like the wet sand at all. Yes the coil is waterproof but the rest of it isn't and you can't get it wet. It worked great on the dry sand but I know you want to work the water. I bought an Excal because I didn't want to chance ruining the EXII and the XT70 couldn't cut it the wet. Perhaps someone has had better results with the wet sand but I got a lot of falsing.

I have used the X-70 here on the saltwater beaches with success in both the dry and wet. Just a matter how you set it up and what coil/freq you used (I like the stock coil since the 5x10 is a bit tougher to handle on the wet...must be a trick that I am missing). Lower the sensitivity and turn on the beach mode and auto ground tracking. It seems to work pretty well though it does look like you lose depth. I also can live with some of the falsing since I can tell a false from a target. Now if I could get the Prospecting mode working in the wet sand, I'd be laughing.

Personally, tho, I would rather use my new ExpII on the beach that I bought used a few weeks back. I broke my leg so it definitely isn't seeing any action until after the New Year but once my leg is healed, the beaches will be my rehab exercise.

cheers...Brissietex

My experience with the X70 at the beach has been pretty good, though only been out a few times. I am using the stock coil, beach mode and sensitivity at 12, and so far the only falsing is when the coil actually touches the wet sand. Otherwise it seems to be just fine:)

I'll be using it quite a bit over the next 2 weeks on Hutchinson Island Florida, and looking forward to the X70 doing well.

Dick,

I always wondered what causes this phenom of falsing when the coil hits the sand. Also, falsing when going over a hole with moving water bothers me a bit too.

Hi Bris,

Every single freq I have used will false when you touch the sand. The X-machines in particular are supposed to be swung at about 1 inch above the surface of the soil and not scrubbed. The fact that they are designed to be swung at this height would probably lead them to react even more to touching the sand.

Moving saltwater can be viewed as moving metal. You also now have a void in the surface that has changed the ground balance of that area. When you GB against the wet/damp sand the salt acts as a conductive soil and the sand usually acts as a ferrous soil. Therefore the machine has been GB'd against this combination and that is where it is quiet. A water filled hole is now much more conductive, the GB has dramatically shifted because the ferrous sand background has disappeared momentarily. I hunt beaches with black sand so that those changes are even more dramatic.

Here's a previous post that may provide more info.

Sorry to hear about your leg brissietex. Hope it heals quickly for you. Just remember; you can always use your detector as a crutch if you need some support. Every body around you will think that you're just detecting.:detecting::stretcher:

Thanks Mick. I just got myself a used ExpII with a WOT coil and am so looking forward to be rehab on the beach with it. Never fear...the X-70 is still here for park and some beach work but couldn't pass up the deal on the ExpII since I've always wanted one.

cheers...Keith
