OK, a stupid "which detector is better" question

I used to have a Garrett 1250, 1500, and a couple of other detectors that all got sold due to lack of use. Now I don't want to get into a Minelab vs Garrett debate, but as I exclusively hunt older, trashier parks in search of old coins, I found that my Minelab Explorer was getting all the usage. Well suffice it to say, I really liked my 1500 and it did a few things better than the Explorer.

So I was thinking about getting another 1500. But then I see that Garrett has a new model, the 1350. Numerically, it sounds like it is between the 1250 and the 1500. But after reading the information on the Garrett web site it sounds like it may have newer technology than the 1500. The target sizing feature of the 1500 was a big help and both the 1350 and 1500 appear to have it. But if I am reading the product descriptions correctly they do it using different technologies. So I guess my question is this, which detector would be better at identifying shallow coins (5" or less) in trashy old parks?

Either detetector you mentioned would do nicely - with reservations. Here they are.

I like to think of the GTP 1350 is the "1500 Lite". The 1500 has Sizing, where the 1350 has Profiling. Otherwise they are the same unit.
"Huh?" you say.
Yeah, it seems a little confusing.

+ Imaging (sizing) As found on the 1500/2500 GTI series, uses a separate receive coil to provide a pretty accurate size representation of the target.
+ Profiling Only on the 1350, profiling uses sweep speed and target dwell time to give a general size picture of the target.

Neither are really revolutionary ideas, when you think about it... but they ARE pretty clever innovations, nonetheless.

At moderate depths, say 5" and up, either would be super performers for your intentions.

The real kicker is that the 1500/2500 GTI's use specail coils, due to the extra receive windings. If you remember your former GTI 1500, there were three loops in the standard coil - an outer, a middle and an inner one. However, with the smaller "sniper coils," the 'Scorchers', there is a problem. These coils are ultrs-desirable in trashy areas like your parks, but there is NO sizing feature available - as they all lack the third winding!

The 1350, on the other hand uses any standard Crossfire coil with no demonstrable change in performance, including the small 4.5" sniper and the smaller ellipticals. Thats what sells me on the 1350 and why I have one myself.

Well let me say this first iv been swinging since 1983 and used about all brands.
The last 2 brands were 1 whites xlt....fine machine just good all around but trash ran it and me crazy.....2 and now use a tecknetics T2
Best machine I have ever used 1 simple to set up.....2 light 3 1/2 lbs
3 I have dug 00 buck shot at 0-5in and have dug a Mercury dime at 13 in and works well in trashy areas
Hope this helps

Hi Nimmy,
The two detectors are identical except for the imaging and profiling. The 1350 shows small-medium-large and you already know what the 1500 shows. There are more coils available for the 1350 since it does not require an imaging coil. It's a personal decision as to which method you prefer. Both are outstanding coinshooters. Good to see you drop in Nimmy.
