Oh No - Not Another Comparison Question (10"DD Excelerator v. 10X12" SEF Butterfly)

Has anyone had any experience between the two coils? I'm looking at the 10"DD coil but the KellyCo guy said you might want to run with the 10X12" SEF Butterfly coil instead.

I'd love to hear some feedback on either a comparison OR, your personal experience with either coil.

Thanks!

You really can't go wrong with any of them on the MXT. The EX10 is good, the White's D2 is slighty better and the SEF is best IMHO. The SEF has better ground rejection, better seperation, slightly better depth and slightly more ground coverage for my style of hunting. It also has it's dis-advantages as well. Weight, open design, not as sensitive to smaller objects and all three are based on the DD design. (Some ground favors the Conical coils).

I use the SEF on my Vision and here I am holding a gold coil found last week and our attack dog guarding my back for gold thiefs.

Larry thanks so much for your input. I value your advice. I am going to order the SEF coil and hopefully I'll need an attack dog to keep the would be golf thieves away as well!

BTW, why do you consider the "Open Design" to be a dis-advantage? Also, you say not as sensitive to smaller objects...what do you consider a "smaller object"?

Again, thanks for all your advice.

Hi my friend....I have the 10X12SEF...It's my favorite coil...I hear some good things about the 10" coils and you can't beat White's service. The SEF is a little heavy, but is worth the weight...

If you do any field or brush hunting, you will soon learn to use a solid, or more solid coil design. The open spyder design gets caught on everything from corn stalks to brush.

Don't forget to mention to Kellyco that I sent you and don't be afaid to ask for special Findmall priceing. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Good luck David.

P.S. Small objects varies with depth. A small object, (gold stud earring) might be OK at 1-2 inches, but the deeper it gets, the less likely you will hear it with a larger coil. I used an earring as an example, but you get the idea, I'm sure. Bigger coils works best for bigger targets.

But even on the open type coils you can get a piece of lexan or plastic at the hobby store and cut it out to fit the coil use zip-ties to fasten it to the coil and you wont have the problem of it hanging up on everything.............

I love that idea. Thanks Bob!

That's what I had to do to that 10 X 14, it was giving me heck in the fields.......

Pretty soon my turn will come ,Iam still waiting waiting waiting and waiting.I would be looking at it every day probably drive my wife crazy showing it to her over and over.

When I first saw the 10x12 SEF (Butterfly) coil I thought no way was it going to be in my arsenal of coils, but then JW sent one to me for field testing. Boy was I wrong about this coil. I just love the coil. If you like to dig deep targets then this is the coil for you. I found not only did it get down to the deep targets it was easy to pinpoint with given its strange design. When I first started swinging it I thought it was a smiggen heavy, but given the fact that I am also swinging a DX1 target probe on my detectors shaft it would stand to reason that it would feel heavy. Without the probe its just fine. VDI numbers were accurate but crown caps were a problem. I have a 10" DD Excelerator on its way from Kellyco and I can't wait to get it into the field and then I will be able to compare it with the 10x12 SEF. I don't think you will go wrong if you decide to get 10x12 SEF, but buy a shovel when you order it. JMHO HH Dennis in Idaho

Do you have a photo of your unit with this type setup?

Thanks.

Hope this helps. This shows everything except the shovel. HH Dennis in Idaho

How much more depth do you get with the 10x12sef butterfly compared to 10"dd and can you crank it open or does it start to become unstable at high sensitivity. What is some of the better depth you have got with the sef coil.Have you used it at the beach? thanks for the answers

Answers to those questions will vary wildly, plus, I don't measure how deep my targets are. Yes, I have used the 10X12 on the beach.

Larry can you just give me a ruff idea is it probably a couple inches more than 10" most of the time and did it seem to work as good as the 10" at the beach.I know location dictate a lot of answers because of the soil content in each state, that why i will tell some one how it worked here but don't know how it works there Thanks

It would probably be closer to 1/2" or less...maybe.... I like the 10X12 for it's other features, not so much for the depth. Far too many people think depth should be #1 when comparing coils and detectors, when in reality, that should be near the bottom of the list, or at least for me. Depth will also vary from person to person in the same field as well.

Using the 10x12 SEF,I have dug older coins in the 8" range and dug an iron relic at nearly a foot. Like Larry said answers on depth may vary due to ground conditions in each respective area. I don't have the 10" DD Excelerator to compare against the 10x12 SEF but I have a 10" Excelerator on its way from Kellyco. In regards to cranking it up to full power, I have been able to run the detector higher than preset in some areas I hunt but in some other areas I was not able to do that before it become unstable. In my experience evaluating the 10x12 SEF it seemed to run better at or near factory preset and I was digging coins etc. at good depths of 6 to 8". I am still evaluating the 10x12 SEF and I can't wait to get started this year if only the weather would cooperate. HH Dennis in Idaho

I like to have a little more ground coverage from time to time and there are a few spots that it might handle better than the 10"dd,But don't know if i would use it that much, more at the beach. Thanks for information helps with my decision

Well i think you will really like the 10"dd and as the weather go,s one day good next day no good today suppose 59 tomorrow 40s next week will bring the big change for the better. When will you have new coil that's the day you want nice weather. Thanks for information,I wondered about those coils since they brought them out, if i found a good deal on one or used i might pick one up.
