Oh---no another fragile gold ring

WE are staying at a beach that has been very popular over the years and I was detecting along the low water mark without much success,AS I moved closer up toward the high tide mark I started to get a few results,as I carried on it became apparent that there was an area about 2 metres wide that stretched along the beach for about 100 metres, this area had been washed out with resent wave action.I managed a good collection of coins the oldest being the 1872 threepence with the hole in it that must have been someones charm at some stage I found all the silver rings pictured some are way beyond repair but a few will clean alright. The two gold rings (9kt) came within an hour of each other, when I got back home and after cleaning the large ring,it simply slipped out of my hand and landed on the the lino floor then broke into 4 pieces,I couldn't believe it,this is the 3rd ring that has broken on me as I cleaned them up.I spoke to a jeweler abou this and his explained that when a lower carat ring is exposed the the salt and elements for a long period a chemical reaction can take place that makes the fragile.....ahh well I guess its good for scrap

Nice finds. I will be at the beach over Easter and am looking forward to finding some nice stuff with my ETrac. Even though my ETrac is over 4 years old it is still a gold virgin.

Thanks for the waring on low carat gold and salt water. I hope I get to evaluate the effect.

Howdy LittleJohn,Yip Etrac works extremely well in the salt I just am very careful not to get it wet,I limit the water to half way up the lower shaft
and be very careful not to store it on its side for an hour or two, otherwise the salt water will run right up the centre of the shafts and into the inner works (stuffs it up big time)

Nice haul, you hit the line just right and I bet it was tons of fun. I always go back over an area like that again while trying different settings that may add to your ring count. The thin gold rings are very hard to discern. If you do go back let us know how you do the second round and what you tried.

Thanks for posting
