John you can start giving lessons in detecting on how to use the ACE and make money doing it.
Invest the money in gold and silver and you'll be ahead.

Happens all the time. I don't worry about it anymore since the last two or three work associates who bought the machines I recommended didn't have the patience to learn to use it. Or the ability to sleuth out the best places to go, or the brains to go there even when I gave them directions. It's been my experience that (aside from pure dumb luck) a rank newbie armed with a detector only serves to clean up the surface pennies and dig a lot of the junk out of a good site, leaving the good stuff for me.

I'm not as cynical as I sound, I have tried to turn on several people to the benefits of the hobby but it's kind of like astronomy (another hobby of mine). You either get hooked on it or you don't, that's all there is to it really. I usually give someone who bought the machine about 3 months at the most, by that time they've either stuck it in a closet (at which time they stop asking questions and generally avoid the subject in conversation), or they ask questions all the time and start turning up some real goodies. Either way, we don't seem to end up "competing" at the same sites for some reason.

Maybe you should start a new Metal Detecting club at the hospital? I'm sure you could come up with a great sounding name. That could even be a new contest! Lots of possibilities! HH

I was the only one 5 years ago. Now, with alot of my help there are four of us. Kindof unforunate!!! But the good thing is they are well behind me in hours of use.

It's always a toss up. Introducing others to our hobby is always fun and fulfilling, but then you have created competition. Which way to go?? At least I get to hunt with the people I've introduced to detecting, and they're usually willing to do the driving, so that helps.
