And that's exactly what I said when we got into the trash pit! I'm very sorry that I don't have pics to post yet. This new laptop doesnt seem to like my camera software for some reason. Anyway, it all started with a deep bullet signal. As it turned out, it wasnt that at all. I jokingly told my friend, watch it be a big chunk of iron. And it was. But it gets better! My friend said $#& it, im not digging that..... I said well get the &%#@ outta the way, i am. After a bit of clearing 16 inches down came out a beautifil CW era shovel! Ok, i know i know, im a newbie and i dont know what im talking about.......but here's the proof in the pudding: Ive been hunting and researching this site for months now. It was a camp here in illinois, it was returned to farmland right after the war and nothing was built on the land that i can find record of. We continued to scratch the walls of the hole that the shovel came out of. We got bones...lots of them...large animal probably cow bones. And i dont mean just a few either. Im talking i could have built 3 or 4 cows out of the bones that came out of this hole by the time we were done. We got boot parts with rivets still in em. We got ash and glazed brick along with the occasional clinker. But the most beautiful site to see was the glass. And more glass than i knew what to do with. Most of the bottles were broken. Sadly all of the broken ones would have been the best bottles. Scroll flasks, eagle flasks, pikes peak flasks, a historical flask, along with beer wine and blob top soda bottles. Wound up getting a very nice clay pipe with part of the stem. There were 2 Goodyear rubber combs patent 1851. Those were the first products goodyear made and that was their first patent date which changed in 1870 or shortly thereafter so i know that they are period combs! Our trench was 3 ft wide, 2 ft deep, and 6 ft long. We swung the detectors over the piles as they came out of the pit. Square iron nails...lots of em! Found a hand forged door handle as well as a wall hung candle holder. There were barracks on this site that were 24 ft wide by 100 ft long so i will assume that along with all of the window glass they were in or on one of those buildings from the camp. Also to come out were boot pieces and strap pieces. The brass tip of a pen, bullets, and globs of melted lead. Stoneware ink bottles....broken....&^^%&$^! We got 3 whole bottles...2 of which were slick medicines blown in key molds and an open pontiled 10 sided aqua umbrella ink bottle. We stopped at 6 ft only because we had to get going, it was late. But the trench was longer and we will have to go back to finish it at some point. Earlier in the day, we were swinging the detectors and out popped an 1854 seated dime, several bullets, some buttons, a bullet carved into a chess piece, as well as many other small goodies. This was the best day EVER for me on this site. OH.....MY.......!! Im still getting the tingling sensation of all of the relis we saved from the corn field. I will post pics as soon as i can because there are a couple of bullets not listed in jim and dean's book. I also believe that i got a cupfire shell but im not 100% sure since ive never seen one before. So, as soon as i can get the pics up, i will. Happy hunting all!!!
