Oh, by the way, I took the cover off of my coil & it was really dirty with sand, dirt & bits of grass...you might

want to check yours, as I hadn't had the cover off for years & it was stuck all around & had to use a knife blade to pry it loose, carefully!
I haven't used my summer headphones as yet, but I seem to be still getting false signals. The detector does work better on smaller coins now & can hear them better...so less quarters & more nickels, dimes & pennies! Now, if I can just find a really nice ring or rings or I'll go back to hunting those quarters by covering more ground! They do add up more than all those pennies!:D
Good luck & HH to everyone!
God Bless!

Whenever my coil cover gets worn through I replace it and always find dirt & such - like you said. My cover is so tight and intricate that one has to ruin it to get it off. I broke my pocket knife blade last time trying to get it off Steve

When I put it on the 1000 originally I used a sealant to help keep the water and dirt out of the inside. Worked pretty good too. Did cause a bit more bounancy (due to the trapped air) when going into the water with it. I haven't sealed it yet on the 1250 but will soon.
Had a coil die on me once - got water in it so I hesitate to take them into the water but know them are the chances one has to take. (Good news is it was under warranty when it died - both now have no warranty left )
Probably doesn't hurt to clean the shafts too so they slide better instead of sand and grit making assembly and breakdown more difficult.
Gotta pamper our little 'babies'

When I flew R/C aircraft we would seal the wing saddle with silicone so it would seal between the wing and the fuselage. We were cautioned NOT to leave the electronics inside during this process as the fumes from the silicone could and has disolved the coatings on the servo trim pot coil and the wiper. Now I am pretty sure that windings in a coil have some type of coating on them. It seems to me if you had a cracked coil case that this would be a concern. Have you ever heard of this? I personally wouldn't take the chance until I contacted the factory.

I used a bathroom type sealant - a blue rubbery substance. Didn't seem to 'melt' into the plastic as would some of that airplane type butyrate dope that melts plastic to plastic.
Still had to work at getting off the sealant then the coil cover but it didn't harm with the coil or the cover in getting it off.

was around the inner rim & that's where all the dirt & etc went inside. The outer rim was sealed & really hard to get it loosened, but finally did! Never thought about it before, but I don't use my detector in water, so wasn't concerned! Now, I will check it once in awhile & clean out the coil cover!
Sorry to hear about your problems with the cover! I do a lot of searching close to the ground, so need it to protect my loop. I had one cover split & had to get a new one...better it then my coil!
Metal detecting has a lot of expense but what other hobby can you make money while having a good time!

I had to send the detector in for repair! One time I forgot to remove the cover & they kept it when they replaced the bad loop with another loop. From that time on, I always try to remember to remove the loop cover, so I have it for the next one to keep from having to buy a new cover!
God Bless & HH! I hope you find lots of gold & silver while water & land hunting!

does one come home with more money than they left with
I have always scrubbed my coil on the ground, rocks, whatever. I figure I am getting closer to the targets - also takes a lot of weight off my arm. Steve

I may give that a try. I didn't seal my coil cover and working at the beach, it just collected a bunch of sand and salt... drove me crazy. Took me a long time to get the cover off and I just never put it back...
