I only have a few minutes to file this report before we go out the door again for day two of Search and Recovery of Civil War Relics.

Here's a photo of Butch detecting for four hours in the field of bullets. To sum it up... he found diddly squat. After watching him detect for several minutes, I have surmised that his problem is that he's not holding his mouth right. However, Butch didn't come home empty handed... well, yes he did. You see, he found a pair of binoculars that belonged to the land owner, that had been laying out in the field a year and a half, and still worked. So Butch returned them to the land owner as his good deed for the day.

Here is his wife, the lovely Pam. She did better, but in reality, ended up with diddly squat. She dug some deep iron, a pair of wire cutters looked to be made around 47 A.D., and a pouch full of basically everything you don't want to find. But I have to give Pam an A+ for effort.

I faired a little better, but not much. I tell you, I had to scratch to get these couple of things, just so I wouldn't look bad. This first thing, after I got it home and cleaned it up, turned out to be a compass. I believe its a small personal compass from the Civil War, as it is very old, and was found in a Civil War area. The glass on the front is broken, but after I got home, I removed the glass, cleaned it up a little bit, and you can see the N, E, S and W indicators.

Also managed to find 2 dropped .58 caliber bullets. I was starting to have my doubts that I was even going to find one.

Also found this Timex watch that was three inches in the ground. It belonged to the land owner, he had lost it several years ago. I gave it back to him, and suggested a new battery in it might get it going again, it looked to be in workable order.
Today we're going to another place. I talked them into staying one more day, in hopes of putting them onto some relics. I've already had two friends of mine dump four 5 gallon buckets of mini balls on an old ball field... I'll take Butch there and see if he can possibly stumble across one.
Later,
Vernon
