Officers Hut, Infantry Hut and surface Digs

Va Dave

Member
Just dropped in for a sec to share some finds from this weeks evening efforts. Been digging this Union Infantry camp under construction for a month now and I'd say this is about the 10th hut I'v located along with a few trash pits. Got excited when I realized I was in an Officers Hut. The whiskey, some Eagle I's, the bullet carved cone protector, some dropped bullets, and all the furniture tacks were discovered in that hut. The Infantry Hut had deteriorated Eagle buttons, the heel piece, watch fob, bayonet scabbard tips, and dropped bullets and the rest is just scattered surface finds.
Thanks for looking and Good Luck in your Digs,
Dave

Dave:

Have you got a date on this campsite? Do your scabbard tips have 2 holes on one side or 4 holes symmetrical? How far away are your trash pits from your huts? Thanks. Dave

NICE! The Shaler has been on my wish list for 30 yrs. Hope you find the missing piece. :detecting:

Very interesting finds! I like the bottles mostly. I have found about 6 of those 12 sided bottles in one cellar hole before. Great looking Button's also. Looks like you will be having some great digs. Good luck!

Sure Dave,
It's a CW UNION Infantry camp of 1862. The scabbard tips; one of them has 2 holes, the other would have 2 holes but are filled with the little tacks that joined it to the leather, huts have a funny way of preserving details like that, but not always. At this camp, the huts are on the hillsides and the trash pits are in the bottoms. The next hillside is just littered with broken bottles, bullets, ash, melted lead, some burnt relics and some not, evidently where they dumped their chimney clean-out; with trash pits {some previously dug) not far away on top of the hill.

And I forgot to say in my first post that you have some very nice finds. Dave

Sorry to burden you with all these questions ....Can you estimate center to center distance between huts? This posting might help other hut diggers. Thanks again for taking the trouble to answer the first questions. Dave
