Off Topic - A new scam someone just tried pulling on me outside a bank

Pete in MI

after going inside the bank and conducting business as I was preparing to back out of the parking spot a van came along so waited for him to clear the way so I could back out. The driver yelled out something which I didn't hear - turned down the radio, looked at him and said "What did you say?"

The driver of the van said "I have some free home entertainments systems do you want one?" (This is where greed comes in - part of their scam). I said "Yeah sure." So he pulled up on the passenger side opening the back end of his van showing me he has 2 systems. He hands me an envelop and shows to me where he works and that these are 'undeliverable'. He shows me the box with the price on it $3,500 and says "this is how much the boss paid for this". "Do you have a large TV at home?" "Yeah" I reply "a 27 inch". "Wow that is great" he says "So you could use this." Then he says "How much will you give me for it?"

I told him, "I don't have any money to give to you but I do have something to show you" as I pull out my wallet and open it. I show him a badge (a police badge - the one from my Air Force days). He immediately says "I didn't do anything wrong". I said "maybe not but you were going to". I turned and left him (and the other 2 idiots he had in the van with him). Drove off leaving them behind. Was going to get the license number but they were smart enough to keep the back end open so I couldn't see the plate until I was gone.

Beware. Here they were trying to use greed to get someone to go back inside and take money out of their account to get a system that may or may not have been working, or possibly stolen, or loaded with something other than a system. Whatever be careful.

I had the same thing happen go me a couple of years ago. A van pulled up, asked me if I wanted to buy some "Digital Speakers". Said they were "extra" from an installation. When I asked him how they were "digital" speakers, he showed me the positive and negative terminals. "See, positive and negative, ones and zeros. Digital!!" I told him to get lost, before I called the cops. But I'm sure someone thought they were getting a steal!!! LOL

Yea, I hate to admit it, because I thought I was smarter than that, but I got taken about a year ago on one of those van with the intertainment stuff deals. Same kind of thing, only it was a surround sound speaker system that was supposed to be worth $1000., but the guy said he'd take 200. what an idiot I was to buy that piece of crap without opening the box first. It reall was a piece of junk. A really cheezy low end woofer and 4 tinky, twinky, lousy sounding surround sound speakers. I could have done better buying something from Kmart. Well I'll never do that again. Of course the van is long gone to another town or something. I got on the interntet to check this product out and they said what a big scam it was.
