Off to some old home sites with the F5

Terry in PA

New member
Took the F5 out for a hunt along the old Pa canal. There are two sites one on the right side of a creek and the other on the left. After setting up the F5 on site one I ran it with high gain and positive threshold with no problems. Left the disc on zero to hear any iron in the area. There was iron grunts every where. Never seen a site with so much Iron in the ground. I dug a few to see what it was and most were cut nails. Turned the disc up until foil was eliminated then backed it off just enough so foil was accepted. The F5 ran quiet with no Iron grunts. At site # 1 I did get two indian head penny's 1873 and 1898 and a pewter spoon. Site # 2 didn't give up anything but two wheat cents. What I did notice was how soft the soil was at these sites. I dig a good 10 inches and never hit clay dirt which means the older goodies are way down there. The age of these sites are really old I'd say late 1700's to mid 1800's. The old Pa canal is not more then 100 yards from both home sites. I hit the toe path and it also was loaded with iron cut nails. I can say the F5 can separate targets that are close together better the any detector I've used to date and I've been at it since 1993.I see now they have a DD coil for the F5 this may be the ticket for these sites. I am also going to ask the land owner if we can do a dig on the sites. Start off with a 10'x10' area and see what we come up with. I'll try to upload some pictures of the sites and canal lock for you all to see. Can't seem to get the pictures up keep getting a " you did not attach any files error " Any tips on getting these pictures up ?

Terry, the more I use and learn the F5, the more I like it.

It does separate really well with that ellipitical stock coil, you know that the 5" DD will be even better. Looking forward to getting it and using it in my iron infested sites

The F5 kind of gets overshadowed by the F75 and 70.

It sounds like the 5 is not quite as powerful as the 75 and 70, but it's no slouch. Sounds like you had some good hunts with yours.

Yep, what he said. So they did come out with the 5"DD?

The first two pictures are of the first home site. The next two are of the second home site and the last one is the old canal lock.

Thanks for looking !

Man, looks like some good spots to hit for months to come. Good luck and hit them hard.
