In the Sydney Telegraph (theteelegraph.com.au) on Friday the 6th of may 2011, on page 7, there is a three quarter page story tittled "Last link to World War I combat dies".
The story is about Veteran Claude Choules who served in the British Navy in WWI and as a Petty Officer in the Australian Royal Navy in World War II. At age 110, he passed away in a nursing home in Perth, (the state capitol of Western Australia). He was the last surviving World War I Veteran who served on active duty. ( of any country.)
Just thought folks would be interested, as it probably wouldn't make it onto the world news.
Mick Evans.

An amazing man having survived two wars and living to 110. My Dad will turn 91 this year,God willing, and is a WW II vet and was in the Battle of the Bulge.

and the rest of the world . The stories he could tell would leave you wondering about life for years

I remember when the last Civil War Vet died (in the 1950's I think) and when the last Spanish-American War vet died (My grandfather was in that one). And now, the last WW I vet is gone. Amazing how long some of these guys lasted isn't it?

MrGee

I'm hopeless at doing that sort of thing. It was good to see another news story on it.
1950 for an American Civil war Vet. Wow!! It Although the age would have been the same, it sounds sooo long and amazing. It would be fantastic to talk to folk of such age. The stories they can tell you would give a great insight into the past.
McGee. It would be very interesting to know that your father served in such an history battle. Not a very nice place to be, but necessary.Your family can look back with pride over the next generations at what he did, as they search there family tree.
One of the interesting things mentioned in the newspaper article, was that all the returned servicemen felt a great need to have a memorial service (day) to remember their fallen comrades; not to remember war, but their sacrifice. They all hated war utterly hated it.
Mick Evans.

Hey, they had mentioned that on the local tv news and the world news on tv last week. Interesting story. I think the last American WW1 vet died a year or two ago, I can't recall at the moment.

SALUTE
A brave veteran who fought the fight and kept the faith
Now he must sleep and enter eternal rest,
And hear God's voice: Well Done,
My good and faithful servant...!

Soon, we too shall sleep
But, will we be so brave,
As our spirit soars
And leaves behind the Grave..

Thanks for this email. Our veterans need to be remembered and respected.
