Went to my 40th High School Reunion this weekend. Took a tour of the School and noted all the computer type classes added to the curriculum. While checking out the remodelled cafeteria I picked up a nickel from the floor, 1944-D. I think it would take a super computer to figure the odds on that find.

We can still find some goodies still in circulation but I don't remember seeing a silver nickel. Good eye Steve.

Congratulations Steve, you beat the odds. I get about 1 silver nickel per 1,000 nickels sorted. Think of it this way, if each and every day of the year you conduct 3 transactions that resulted in you receiving a nickel in change, at the end of the year you would most likely of gotten 1 silver nickel. Or if every week you bought 1 roll of nickels from a bank, at the end of the year you would likely have 1 silver nickel. Since 44d made up 3.71% of all the silver nickels made, the odds of getting that specific date and mint mark are around 1 in 26,954. So think how many nickels you will have to find on the ground before you duplicate your feat. It is a good thing we have tools that will help us.
