Odd spike with flattened, button like top

Found today in my back yard. My house was originally built in 1900 but the town dates to aprox 1840. I don't know if the property was lived on before this house was built. This item shows as a +14 VDI, same as a nickel. The emblem on it looks like a large horse shoe with a small horse shoe inside of it, then a large letter i through the middle of both. They could be letter C's. The top of the flattened round part tapers thin at the top, almost as if you are suppose to hold it with your fingers and twist it back and forth into something. Both sides look the same.

 
I rubbed on it and got some more detailed pics. It has a small circle at the opening of the large C or horseshoe on each side...

 
Really or is that a guess? Thats kinda cool if it is. Thx
 
Thanks for the link, ACEinOZ! Now I can see what it should look like in better condition. In that persons photo you can tell that the 'i' or ladder thing in the middle actually goes through the Large C or horseshoe which is above the bottom of the C and below or inside the C at the top. Thanks again
