odd letters

Here are two letters that I found in NC at an area where both the Union and Conferderate calvery clashed. The pic is of the front and back. One nail is still attached in both of them. I was wondering what these may have fell off from. I thought that only square nails were used in the 1800's, but I might be wrong. Both letters have round holes for the nails. The quarter is for size comparison.. Any help with dating these would be great!! TedNC
