Odd iron piece found on Georgia Battlefield - scrap iron or ??

This was found in the woods where troops were positioned for the battle of Walnut Creek in Georgia. Normally, I would have blown this off as just farm junk but it was located in an area that was heavily wooded, no houses, and pretty much everything else that we pulled out from that area was civil war related. I pulled out what I believe is a Spencer cartridge and the bottom of perhaps a Henry and my friend found a couple of nice dropped (3 ring?) bullets plus a piece of artillery shell. I had thought I had found a buttplate as well, but after looking closer it looked too flat to be one but I'll include a photo here of it.

The item that I was curious about was the curved piece with the loop on the end. The grooves at the bottom are about the size of a finger grip or possibly for ropes.

If I had found this anywhere else I would have likely not paid much attention to it, but the location and the depth sure made me wonder if it was from the civil war skirmish.
