hello all...went to a park tonight and found the following: 1 nail, 3 pop tabs, 2 zippers, 4 unidentifiable (trash), 1-1970 nickel, 6 pennies and........a clay marble, marble just happened to be in hole i was digging for one of the pennies. i haven't seen one in 30 years and I'm sure that's what it is. i remember my grandpa had a jar of them and he would let me play with them when i was a kid. sorry, no pics this time. i have mentioned before how hard this Indiana dirt is but tonight i broke a rivet and 3 spot welds on a fold able camping shovel. its like digging in asphalt and i am having a blast !!!! keep swingin' and a smilin'...............monster.

Ground gets hard here too. In a short hunt I had a while back, took 2 of my diggers and destroyed them. Sucks when it happens but guess it comes with the territory.:detecting:

Monster, you need to get one of the real deal army surplus shovels.
Lessee, I had a link somewhere.....
Here it is: Good Folding Shovel
You WILL NOT break one of these Kraut folding shovels.
Leave the cheapo, Wal-Mart fall apart Chinese knock offs on the shelf.

ETA....uh....wait. You're using a camp shovel....in a park? Bad idea. The park would prefer you not dig holes that large.

Here's a great inexpensive tool lots of folks are using...under $20, lifetime warranty.....I've yet to hear of anyone breaking one.
Ames Green Thumb tool

And it's lighter and easier to carry than a regular folding shovel. I believe they carry these at Lowes and Wal-Mart as well.

Here is yet another link to a great company producing fine digging tools...

As mentioned above, you usually do NOT want to bring excavating tools (shovels/Picks) into Local/County/State parks...Easy way to be asked not to return...

thanks guys for the input and normally in other circumstances i would not take my small shovel (about 1 1/2" longer than the ames garden tool) but i live in a town of about 650 people. pretty small and laid back. a horse ran down our road sunday (no rider) but your advice is noteworthy of 99.9% of other places.

I picked up the blue handle Ames digger a few weeks ago at home depot for 12.87 and love it. I think i have retired my buck knife and am sold on the Ames. This thing doesn't mess around and is not overly big and intrusive.
