My way...Be on the beach / in the water and see first hand...

There are no absolutes. Try to be at ocean when the tidal swing is the greatest. Full moons. Storms. Or try to be there for fresh drops before the sand claims the treasure. I have been there on calm days only to see a small area where the water is making a cut. So the answer is no there are no written rules. People that live near the beach have the advantage. And they are not going to tell you when conditions are good.

I do not know of any method to predict what the conditions one will find at the beach. The number of visitors, Status of tides, Storms, Wind direction and strength ETC all contribute. I hit the beaches for about 6 hours twice a week. Each trip finds slightly different conditions.

Im sure most only keep a mental log... i have seen a stiff overnight wind blowing at a 90 degree angle make a nice long deep cut.. ive seen nice cuts at the beach that only affect a 100 yard strech of beach.... this latest tropical storm has gotta be helping somebody with 3 days of sustained winds, but even so timing is everything as the treasure window only stays open for a few hours.

That "Tropical Storm" did not do much of anything to my beaches. Truth be known I was disappointed in that "Storm" It did not live up to its name in my area. Been out twice since it went Thru. Dug a bit over ten bucks in clad (mostly recent drops as it is still shiny) a few pieces of junk jewelry, one sterling ring that was still sticking out of the dry sand and one 14k mens wedding band.

I save some trips by checking the local web cam. I am physically on the beach 3 or 4 days a week. I watch the tide deltas, surf size and weather. I ask questions of more experienced people. I think about it a lot.
I hope to get a clue before I am to old to remember why I wanted to know.
