Obsessions

If you don't think detecting can become an obsession for some..Just read the forums... You'll soon know who is and who isn't obsessed ..........

NOW I am Not. KNOCKING ANYONE !! I'm just saying ..... Some are obsessed Hahahahahahah ......... I have known Guys who used their entire vacation days detecting....One, two,3 days at a time..then they wonder why their wives get up set ..................:help: No vacation time for family left .

Others ( Me Included) took my detector on vacation and just about abandoned my family while I went detecting.. Whew ..Did I pay for that little deal....After looking at it open minded I guess that was a little over the top... and a bit inconsiderate on my part...

It would be nice to have a wife that loves to metal detect.

So I guess she would be up set if I went every night, all my vacation days, all weekend (Both Days) ......... and that was my priority LOL..........
I'm not going to say I never did it..But I am going to say we had some serious talks about my actions .. and I did most of the listening .... "If you get my drift " LOL...Let's just say her sense of humor was VERY limited..........

We both started in 1995, I bought the new White's XLT and my wife bought the Tesoro Toltec ll. Her Toltec ll would just make better finds in and around the trash than my XLT.
She now has a Tesoro Deleon and when I hunt with her I use a White's IDX Pro or 6000 Pro XL because of the cross talk of two similar frequency detectors, she often out does me:rolleyes:

Randy----You're very fortunate to have a wife that loves to metal detect! (whether she "out-does" you or not) :)

Yes, Yes, a thousand times yes! I'm obsessed with detecting!...:detecting: my Wife of thirty plus years knows this, and every once in a while (week) she says something sort of snotty...I dont care! She sure seems to like to rob me of my good finds anyway......Her eyes light up when I bring home the cash! I dont need much for myself, gas in the car, smokes in my pocket, and a little beer...At least I dont golf or run around chasing floozys, and I can fix most anything, and,. I do write a little poetry...like this...

The Perfect Life

To live on a beach in the Tropics in a hut I built by hand, hunting coins and rings and other things from tourists in the sand!
Or in the Outback harsh and sere where nuggets can be found, not the ones that post a penny weight, the ones that post a pound!
Alaska? Yes! In summertime 'neath retreating glaciers tread, pulling globs of gold from gravel, big as a baby's head!

Oh joy a subtle signal! A low and sultry tone, as sweet as Sirens singing to my auditory bone!
Could it be a golden wedding band? A buried Roman hoard? A pulltab or a nickel? A nail stuck in a board?
Sweet Anticipation! You are a cruel god! I need some shine from time to time to keep me busting sod!

Headphoned up before the Sun, a signal for to dig, rooting up the terrasphere like a frenzied truffle pig!
Not a peep escapes a prod, a fearsome force am I! Stuffing metal in my pouch as the World slumbers on by!
Scanning earth with urgent purpose, like a dog after a bone, tick-tocking 'cross the Planet like a Human metronome!

Even at night I cannot sleep, adventures in my head, so off to the dangerous hunting grounds on the path of the World Wide Web!
The keyboard is my trusty steed, my compass is a mouse, I search the World by satellite from the comfort of my house!
The baleful glowing monitor, a perfect Hunters Moon, wandering website wastelands like a digital Daniel Boone!

What is this grand obsession? A hobby or a sport? A mental aberration or addiction of some sort?
Chores neglected at the house still yet this coil swing! One step from a bracelet, two steps from a ring!
Three more to the silver, four more to the gold, five to hidden treasures, and riches yet untold!

At least thats what I tell myself with optimism high, chip kicking through a totlot, sweeping fields and beaches dry.
The Perfect Life a vision, swinging coil wild and free, digging holes in heat or cold 'til one is dug for me!

:clapping:That is a great poem Mud

My wife has no interest in detecting except for the occasional piece that she keeps for herself out of my treasure box. She makes Hand Made Quilts. Blue Ribbon Winners at the local Fair. She is a very observant lady and when I start to show signs of restlessness she says "Why don't you go play" She means go detecting. Of course I am a good obedient husband and am out of the house as fast as I can grab my equipment. After a visit by my Brother-in-law I decided that I wanted to get into detecting and even told her how much I was going to have to spend to get the equipment I wanted. She had NO objections.

Met a couple guys at the beach a while back and they were there for one thing and one thing only and that was a week of detecting. I did not ask what their wives did while they detected.

So far I have been lucky enough to be able to keep her around for approaching 50 years. June 2014 will mark that milestone. We are not planning a party just a vacation to a couple of places that we love to visit. Of course I will take my detector as there are a couple of places that I need to work. I will not over do the detecting.

I find detecting to be a lot like hunting and fishing. We are always in the anticipation mode. Anticipating the next good find, the next fish to bite or the next game animal to appear on the scene.

Of course its addicting.

From March of 1970 until December of 2009 I kept the Civil War relics, most of the silver coins and all the gold jewelry I found except what I returned to the owners and what female relatives confiscated, . My wife constantly fussed at me for spending so much time detecting and repeatedly commented I was obsessed with detectors and detecting, but she did an about face when I sold most of the jewelry, common silver coins and Civil War relics for several thousand dollars. Now, unless something has to be done, she tells me I should be detecting instead of piddling around the house.

Sounds like you two have fun..and really enjoy the hobby Hombre !!

Mine doesn't mind short hunts , or some weekends but she gets all bent if it becomes an obsession thing ......... As stated above. She thinks were all nuts :spin:

............ That said," she's still a good woman" who has hung in there with me for many years Good and challenging ones !!

Thank goodness we had many good ones, and only a few challenging times.

wow, this really hits close to home... wife has gotten a lot better about it.... but it has been a major issue in our relationship...you guys with wives that also like detecting don't know how good you got it,,, ya she was really in freakout mode this last year.. got so bad that the only times I could hunt was the nights she worked midnight shift...the old sneak out middle of the night detector in hand... now that she has taken up smoking and the menopause thing has evened out life is much better.... now she tells me to have fun when I go out and it feels much better doing it with a clear conscience.. took her on my yearly scrap gold selling trip..also was able to find her a gold ring that just happened to be her size and have her birthstone in it... ahhh gold does calm the savage beast.... cool poem mud... happy thanksgiving to all...

You have a gift for writing Mud....great poem. I'll bet one of the detecting/treasure magazines would publish it...you might even make a buck or two.

My wife has no problem with me detecting as long as I keep up with my chores. I do have to pay attention to the balance between work, family and detecting. If the scale drops too far on the detecting side, she will let me know. I cannot get her to even put on the headphones to try out a machine. She says "not for me, I have zero interest". She has no problem working in the dirt though. She has helped me build fences, pull stumps, plant trees etc,.... weird.

That's why........... I'm single!

Let me tell you what it's like. I come home from work, roll around on the ground with my Rat Terrier for awhile. Then, I sit down and think "hey, we should go out detecting". I ask my dog if he want to go for a ride, and he about jumps up to my shoulders. I grab what I need and we're gone as long as we want. If it gets dark and I'm having fun, I put on the headlight and we hunt some more. No one is ticked at me when I get home. In fact, there's a cold beer waiting for me.

Afieldsne! You are one lucky blankety blank! I've heard it said that after 20 yrs of marriage you start thinking of ways to fake your own death, and after 30yrs you dont even care if you fake it or not!
