Observation on depth indication

Captain Kirk

New member
I have found that the depth indicator has considerable error depending upon the amount of air between the ground and the coil.

I generally perform the pinpointing function with the coil about 1" above the ground (at the grass top level). I consistently got depth readings of 6" to 8". I would dig a deep plug and find the coin near the top of the plug. Through experimentation, I find that what was a 6" to 8" reading would drop to about 2" when I pressed the coil firmly against the ground. Are the rest of you finding similar results?

HH,
Glenn

to all conductors or do you see it mostly on high coins?

Thanks
Tom

Tom,

I can not give an informed opinion about whether it is on all conductors. I mostly only check the depth reading if I plan to dig. I have been hunting using 3 tones and it is true for nickels as well as copper pennies, dimes and quarters. I will have to do some testing to determine the behavior on non-coin items. The depth indications seems to be reasonably accurate on coins if you press the coil firmly to the ground.

HH,
Glenn
