Numerical Values

Can anyone twll me what numerical values o your Explorer diplays when detecting silver coins. I have tried several tests all seem to be in the 24 through 28 range, but I have yet to find a silver coin while hunting.
Thanks............Larry

Larry;
Those are the right range for silver.
Next go back to using the smart screen using iron mask at -10.
Dig all targets till you get used to the different sounds and the position on the screen.
I've only been using the explorer since Sept. have found 4 mercs a lot of clads Many dimes. The sound is very distinctive repeatable solid.
You are severely limiting yourself using only the numbers. On vacation last week found 200 coins
50 were clads and silver,also silver chain, silver ring, gold plated watch and cast metal pin all using iron mask.
don't get discouraged the explorer takes time and patience to learn. Use the capabilities of the machine. HH

I seldom hunt in numerical mode. I thought it might be easier to descride the numercial value rather than try and desribe where the crosshairs are on the screen. I set up a custom program to help deal with the iron problems. I was just curious what others were doing. Most of my sites are very trashy. Hence vast numers of tabs, etc.
Thank you for your insite....Larry

Larry;
Sounds like you have a good handle on the machine.
best of luck and happy hunting. Many newbies will try to hunt numeric only and this is a big mistake.

I always hunt in the numerical mode & im not a newbie. The reason is that it is alot easier
to interpret the #'s rather than where the crosshairs are. especially in trashy areas, it allows you to quickly determine the GENERAL RANGE
of where a target falls (in conjunction w/ tone discrimination). You should not interpret any one number to definitely be a certain target, as the numbers just average what the target(s) are.
This has been my experience, I may not be 100% right on this one, but i do enjoy hunting in the numerical mode.
thank you
P.S. I usually do verify targets by switching to the crosshairs before digging. Then I verify conductivity, and exact depth w/ my Periscope.

I must agree, the Periscope is a God-send. I hunt in most parks and some beaches while on vacation. Locating items with it in grass makes pinpointing a breeze. I can't imagine hunting without a Periscope.

Peter;
I hope that I was not misunderstood. I was trying to convey that for a new detectorist to pick up an Explorer and hunt only in numeric mode would deprive them of many advantages that a machine like the Explorer has to offer.
Happy Hunting and happy holidays

I changed to an Explorer from a Whites machine and depended heavily on the VDI numbers (+ / - 100)to identify targets. The Explorer is very limited in it's number range for good targets as you have observed. I have become more comfortable identifying targets from the cross hairs on the 2D display and hardly ever rely on the digital numbers except to identify nickels.
Wheat pennies made during WW2 also have a different metal content and tend to read closer to a Indian head or Zinc cent. I have made a quick reference chart that I use for digital numbers and the crosshair readings. I have stuck this to the detector just in front of the armrest.
Most good coins except nickels will appear in the RH corner of the screen. The center of the crosshairs is above the "H" in threshhold on the Y axis and from the "S"to the "R" in the smart accross the top.
