Nulls & Tones

Does the explorer "read" through a null on iron? How do you tell when coming off of iron what a diggable target is? I get a lot of good sounding tones around iron but have yet to find anything worth digging.

The good targets will still sound good normally and you should be able to lock onto the signal at least from one direction.. when hunting in iron, make sure your in fast recovery and running with a lowered iron mask setting around -9 -10, also try to kkepp your gain setting lower for softer iron falses.. no higher than 5 with the stock coil, 6 with the smaller ones. work those signals good as you ccircle the target, usually a good target in iron will get better the more you work it while iron will null more, kick the crap off the surface if in an area you can and get the coil scrubbing the ground.. use your ears and listen for the softer tones, iron has a very distinguishable ping

Jim,
In an email to me you said quote: "with the 8 inch coil I set my gain to 6 or 7... remember to get a good reading on the smart screen the threshold must return, so after getting the signal sometimes in trash you have to lift the coil up and read the meter.. the crosshairs are very accurate I can tell an indian from a tab or screwcap and
pennies from dimes and quarters"
Does this mean that the explorer will ignore good target when nulling is occuring??? *In high areas of iron?*
Thanks
Tom

No I meant if theres nulling nearby the good target the ID cursers wont change till the threshold returns.. If your hunting in iron and the detector is nulling all the time and you go over a good target you will hear it, its just that moving the coil tpo the side off the target will go back to a null and the reading will not always be correct on the smart screen, so I lift my coil off the good signal tpo get a reading if Im interested in what its saying, usually the audio will tell me without even bothering

Jim,
You have been holding back on your tips. I haven't seen that one on the forum before. Let us other struggling Explorer owners hear about them too! How about a list of tips or better yet a book?

yes please i need all the tip's i can get like what is the best settings for coin shoting in trash and no trash

Jim,
Correct me if i am wrong but many good targets (coins) that is in with iron will sound good, but the crosshairs will show iron most of the time, this is one reason to run iron mask as low as possible so you will not miss a coin in with iron. So you have to go more by the tones than the crosshairs on the smart screen when there is a lot of nulling from iron.
I dug a silver quarter on Wendsday that was in a heavy hunted areas that sounded decent, but the crosshairs were on the left side of the screen with nulling on both sides of the target. In pinpoint it was one big signal so i had to pinpoint in disc and dug the silver quarter.after the coin was dug and the area rechecked in the disc it was one big null. I have seen this many times since I have used the Explorer, infact most all my older and deeper coins sound decent, but the crosshairs show junk because of the iron present and my sovereign got all the other ones.

L.C., I've had my XS about 4 months now. Worked and worked with iron mask and went to sleep at night seeing nothing but the curser/crosshair in my dreams along with all the different tones. Several folks have mentioned setting up your digital program and learning from there. Believe me, that is working for me. I "X"ed out nails and sticky taped the key numbers on my upper rod/shaft for reference. Like 30 = 50cent, 28 = 1 ct, 10 ct, 25 ct and so forth on down. Today I went to a small beat to crud town park and found a 52 rosie, 28s merc, and 6 old wheats that are soaking so that I can read the dates. When I get a good reading in digital, I switch over to iron mask to see where the crosshair lands.(for learning) I think the big boys hunt mainly in iron mask then switch to discrim. That is around the corner for me. I'm still digging swimming pools with the L. digger and have yet to find anything over 10 inches. If only my ship would come in or if the price dropped on those X-1probes, then I would be pulling out the super older deepies. If you try the above technique, I truly believe you might learn the capabilities alot faster. I hope not to offend anyone with this method, I know it's starting to gel for me. HH to all, wmike

wher you cant get away from a null no matter where you move the coil.. still lifting it straight up will usually get the crosshairs to move a bit to the right.. The easiest thing to remember is that iron alone will not give you that coin tone, and will usually peg far left at all times unless its a symetric piece then it may read fartfer right.. I dig those anyway because the could be iron buckles... but if its just a few nails causing the nulling you can usually get a good reading by lifting the coil away from the null right ff the target... Again if you listen and dont worry about the meter you wont miss much <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

Rick, by pinpointing in discrimination you mean whatever program you are hunting in right?
Isn't that a little difficult?
