NULL

BAD WORD FOR GT USERS , NULL, Was hunting in local park with friend who uses a explorer 2 i have a gt with the 12in sun ray coil. My friend was using a 5in coil. Well this is what happened i came across a area about 5 feet square and heard nothing but a null on my gt. so i asked my friend to go over the same exact area with his 5in coil. I was shocked when he started to find coins in the 5 foot square area. He did not get a null and let me listen to all the targets that i did not hear with my gt and i was hunting with no discrimination. So what goes with that? Do i need a smaller coil or is it just the gt ? I do find a lot of old coins with my gt and will never get rid of it but just thought someone might know how to correct this. Thanks for any advice

A smaller coil will help a lot. When using a Sovereign in trashy area you will have to use a small coil & a very slow sweep speed & lower your sensitivity setting to overcome the non adjustable iron mask of the Sovereign.. The adjustable iron mask & fast setting on a Explorer will kick your butt though..This is the reason most Minelab users have migrated to the Explorer /Etrac series... The best separating coils for the Sovereign are the S-5, Sea Search, S-8, 8" Coinsearch , in that order... You also want to try searching in all metal & check targets in disc in situations like that... If you read the Explorer forums you will read a lot about the separating abilities of the Minelab's Pro coil & Detechs SEF coils. These newer coils separate targets better allowing you to use a larger coil than what was usable before... wildherre

I feel there is 2 things that caused this. First the coil was too big you were using over the smaller coil that was on the Explorer. Second thing is the Sovereign hates iron and even on its lowest disc settings it will null on iron and mineralization . You are running the iron mask on are you not?? If off it will have a harder time seeing good targets close to iron.
Now on the Explorer you can set the disc different and run a blank screen so it will see everything and with the small coil you can hear each targets separate so it can see the coins in with the nails and trash better. On the GT many times I have to go super slow and listening to the threshold try to get the faint squeak of a good target and then do the Sovereign wiggle over just that very small area.
