NUGGET HUNTING WITH THE AT PRO?

Hi, thought I'd ask here for some info on the AT Pro as a nugget hunter...any experiences would be greatly appreciated as i am trying to pull the trigger on my first detector and i like[a]waterproof-i live in the PNW=RAIN-lots of it... as well getting wet in creeks price [c] made in USA [d] 15khz same as the Scorpion. Just would like to know what percent the AT Pro could be considered effective compared to one of the "made for gold" VLF's such as the GMT,Scorpion,GB2 etc...i'm wondering if i should buy one of those used and then save for the Infinium to have a nice mix of waterproof and PI/VLF or could i do all right for gold with just the AT Pro? Many thanks in advance...

Good question.
I'm curious to see the responses.

I have heard that the X-Terra 70 and the 705 can do some good on nuggets using the 6" DD 18.75 in prospecting mode.
The x-70 works for me on very small gold jewelry.

The AT Pro is a good prospecting unit because it has auto and/or manual ground balance and runs at 15 kHz. I'm not going to be using it as my primary prospecting unit because it lacks a threshold. For instance, this past winter in AZ, I didn't find any individual nuggets using my Scorpion. But rather, I would listen for nulling of the threshold to find areas of black sand concentrations. I would then dig up that soil/classify and run it through the drywasher, recovering fines and flakes that were amongst the black sand concentrates. This cannot be done with the AT Pro, but it can find nuggets down to .5 gram(match head sized)with the stock search coil. The Scorpion can get nuggets that are slightly smaller a little deeper than the AT Pro because of the Scorpion's true "All Metal" mode and adjustable audio threshold. Both machines can get smaller nuggets when using the Sniper search coils, but only down to around one grain. If you want to get any sub grain nuggets, you'll have to go for the GMT or GB2. I will, however, be using my AT Pro for nugget sniping in creeks, rivers and streams since it can go underwater up to ten feet.:garrett::detecting:

Here's a link to the AT Pro field test report by Chris Gholson on Lost Treasure magazine:

He found some nuggets during the field test.
Best of luck to ya, whichever machine you decide to get. Happy Hunting!:)

Thanks Metalhead...excellent answer. I get my AT Pro tomorrow and will be out in the creeks this week.I got the sniper coil as well...i will be using the AT Pro underwater as well...pity about the lack of threshhold as far as finding black sands and sub grains...i might have to get another machine to help assess potential claims but i know i will have fun sniping...nice to be able to work in the rain too--thanks again :please:
