Nubie To Explorer

Dug in Me

New member
DFX User purchased an Explorer to detemine which is best for me.........
Explorer threshhold pulsated loudly during hunting had to turn off machine to get it to stop.
Is this common or do I have something set up incorrectly. ?????

The threshold responds about the same as the DFX. If the Preamp gain on the DFX is set to about 4 and close to power lines it responds the same as the Explorer with the Manual Sensitivity set to about 30 and close to power lines. If the threshold is not solid on the Explorer then NOISE CANCEL first and if this does not correct the problem, then reduce the sensitivity a click or two. The sensitivity can actually be reduced many clicks without decreasing depth to any serious level. Semi-auto threshold will almost always give a rock solid threshold and greatly increase overall stability. While Semi-auto threshold is the suggested setting by the guys at Minelab there is a lot of debate between users as to how much Semi-auto reduces sensitivity and and how the circuits respond. My personal suggestion is to go with Manual unless you prefer to have the sensitivity adjusted by the electronics and need it for stability. Manual is best in low minerals and for the more experiened users with these type of detectors. Most experienced user can get by with manual sensitivity even in soil with high minerals. There is very little differece between the DFX and Explorer in my opinion.

Which unit do you prefer and why? I have hunted areas with both units first with the DFX then the Explorer, and have picked up items the DFX has missed. It seems the explorer does do a better job with deep items. Is the explorer deeper or do I not have the DFX set up to go as deep????

I have only used the Explorer a couple of times but the set up was very easy, I had no pproblem
learning the pinpointing aspect. The only thing so far is I get fooled by the audio discrimination and have dug up alot of pull tabs & bottle caps. They seem to hit the same as an Indian Head. I don't mind digging alot because I hate to think I have left anything behind. It seems I was not digging these items as much with the DFX, and was probably missing some goodies as well. An suggesations on set that my help me with these or should I just dig, dig, dig...

Thanks

Dug

I find it hard to say that I like one better than the other. The DFX is a really versatile detector that can be customized to the users
