Nubie has question's for lake hunters

OK! o I have not done any MT in 25 years. I am an old river rat and will be lurking in the rivers and lakes. I swim like a fish, but respect the water and if I am walking around in the water I will have a life vest of some type. having said this! My questions. What kind of scoop for lakes with mud bottoms? Or a shovel with floating sifter? Scoop and floating sifter. I have a few lake with Beach around me that have been open since the 30's. I just got a Tesoro Tiger Shark about 2 weeks ago and am impressed. Was MD ing in all medal and was finding bobby pins 4 - 6 inches deep. I have not messed with opening it and supper tuning like the book say you can do. I live in southern Ohio, and do not have any waders or a wet suit. Any feed back please feel free. Thanks!:detecting:

The Tesoro Tiger Shark was a good choice! They hit gold chains quite well! A life vest means your not going to far in the water? In lakes I use a snorkel and mask no vest once your in water over your neck I start to float making it a lot harder to get targets in six foot of water or deeper! I would suggest a long handle scoop made of stainless steel a real heavy one. You can use it to push yourself a long in deeper water and it can double as a ballast if needed. HH

:tesoro:Thanks! I Never thought of snorkeling. Just was thinking about chest deep with a gas charged inflatable vest. Do You find much in the deeper water. How do you sift the muck out? The lake water kind of murky most of the time. Snorkeling I like that less work than walking in the water.

I carry this http://www.xsscuba.com/msh_collection.html . I grab handfuls of muck and wave them in front of the coil. Once the target is in my hand I put it in the bag. I hold the top closed and swish it in the water. Open the bag and get out the target. Once you have been snorkeling or diving and have become used to it. You know exactly where your coil is even in the dirtiest water. You know how far away and where you have to dig , and can do it with your eyes closed. You can use one of these bags to find your target and also have one to hold your treasures. Very Very helpful. They cost 6.00 at my local dive shop.

Yes some of my best finds come from deeper water six to seven foot of water. Think about it? If your standing in the water your not moving your arms much. So you'd need to be deep enough to where people are treading water or swimming! As they swim there is more force applied against their rings pulling them off! I also like drop offs in lakes where people step off suddenly find them self's in over their head and start to paddle their way back with a good amount of force! Making a deposit.... Next spring I'm going to get scuba certified and get a surface air supply unit just for that reason! I use a stainless steel scoop with half inch stainless steel hardware cloth on the bottom and you can sift the clay right through it by bouncing it up and down. If it's a sandy bottom I'll like to fan the sand away then just pick up the item. Hope this helps....HH

Thanks! Gosh where has my head been?DA! I like to be in and around the water. Always want to scuba. My wife swims like a fish. Now I just need to Plant a scuba seed, and see if it sprouts. I will see if I still have my fins if not they are not that much. I can remember years ago I could hardly wait for cool weather when they would pull the lake down. Then I would grab my old whites and go MD ing where the new mommies played with there baby's and made deposits. Thanks guys. By the spring gets here I will be ready to go! WELL I AM READY NOW! LOL

First, for that much money and only a year warranty AND you have to take diving lessons on top of it. Second, they are not a sponsor here. Third, that unit is constantly running and there is NO resavoir so it shuts off and saves battery life. I would consider a hookah and I had one BUT not that model. A LOT of research is needed before I tell somebody to pluck down 1500.00.

Plenty of better products out there. AND if your using it and NOT a certified diver, your asking for a lot of trouble.

I would say scubadetector is right get SCUBA CERTIFIED Then you'll see what is needed and become more able to focus on the safety end of things if your interested in diving.

Thanks Guys! I am going to look up a local dive club in Cincinnati and go from there. I know Hamilton county Sheff's has one and maybe some of my old Buddy's are still active. I was looking @ a Hooka set up for 1 person on EBay has a tank and says it will support 1 drive to 40 ft for an hour.It came with a divers flag that looked like was held up by an inner tube in a yellow coating that held the unit.It has a reserve thanks and the motor only runs long enough to fill it as needed. I have seen this outfit in the past it seems but just did not remember til I started looking. It is new seems like about $1500, but I will need to do a bunch of research. am so glad I posted here.
Do you know how long it takes to get certified?
