I've had a few months here in Oregon using my new to me Sov XS with 8" small black coil(beach wading/trash areas) & 12" SEF coil (Land/beach monster awsome seperation)..
I've read about everything I could and the only bit of advice I've not seen mentioned is this-Auto sensitivity works very well & helps avoid confusion in tough soil/trash ridden areas.
Now I only found this out after the first 5 weeks using as much boost as I felt I could get away with-and I kinda sorta got along with it that way-but goodness what a busy set of headphones. I have a sleep disorder & sometimes I just want to take it easy when detecting.
I found using auto is the best way to go for typical park conditions here in Oregon with lots of hot rocks/volcanic soil. On the beaches & in open fields I switch back to max sensetivity. But I've been cross checking every deep target I've come across-Auto sensitivity gets almost all of them as well as any other setting. In the open / beaches I do run in all metal & then cross check in disc. If the target can be "revved up" or gains in VDI strength as you do the hover over it-Dig!. A declining target is typically a iron false or bottlecap-butI'll dig most of them just to help unmask the area if I have time.
And I had a very good day today with my personal best coin-I posted in todays finds...

But this one I'm posting this small 10K Religous medallion seperately as it really showed me the Sovereign XS can find small gold at a reasonable depth no problem...
Open soccer field-heavy mineralized sand used for drainage-rang true & clear. Depth was about 4". In this case I was using the normal sensitivity setting-aprox 80%-but it rang true in auto on a cross check-Using 550 meter VDI was about 410..
It is marked in the smallest script I've ever seen.
One other thing-as the "volume" is actually a gain?...It's best kept at max...But with headphones that tinnituss in a can just for your ears...Not good for me...
I use a inexpensive pair & leave them loose around my kneck. I know the response tones well enough to get nuances with the low volume & if it gets noisy or I want to listen carefully I can slip them on. But I'm much happier/saner-safer-using them like this. The threshold can be adjusted for your "volume" and your ears don't blow off on the shallow targets..
Cheers!
Carl.
