And one more. The Texas state flag is the only state flag that can legally be flown at the same height as the Stars & Stripes. All 49 other state flags have to be flown from a shorter flagpole. That's because, for nearly 10 years, the Lone Star flag was the flag of an independent republic. The 'California Republic' that's referred to on California's flag lasted only 10 days.

With regard to the Texas flag at the same height as the US, Snopes doesn't know what it's talking about. While US Flag etiquette requires that all other state flags fly below the national flag, the 1846 Treaty of Annexation--Texas is the only state to join the union by treaty--which is preserved in the Texas State Archives in Austin, provides that the flag of Texas, having been the flag of a sovereign & independent republic recognized not just by the US, but by European powers as well (France & England, in particular), will always be flown at the same height as the national flag, but may not be flown above it. There are also treaties in there with Britain--signed by Queen Victoria herself--and with France, signed by the then-king of France.

Incidentally, that treaty also allows Texas to split itself into 5 separate states. You'll recall that our governor recently used the word 'secession?' That treaty also contains a provision which would be grounds for secession. The US is obligated by treaty to protect the borders of Texas from outside depredations. The only period in history when that was done successfully was from about 1874 to 1910. The US Army, and primarily a command known as the Seminole Negro Scouts, led by 1/LT John L. Bullis, effectively ended Indian and bandit raids out of Mexico by 1880. There were no more incursions by armed groups until the 1910-1921 Mexican Revolution, when armed bandits masquerading as 'Mexican revolutionaries,' began raiding on the Texas side of the Rio Grande. Most recently, about a year ago, some THP troopers & Hudspeth County deputies got in a firefight with drug smugglers who were armed with automatic weapons. The officers were getting the best of the fight until a HUMV painted in Mexican Army colors, manned by people in Mexican Army uniforms, showed up in support of the smugglers. The HUMV mounted a .50 caliber machinegun. I've seen video of one of those taking down a 7-room brick house with a 250-round box of ammo.

I did a little research on 'Snopes.' 'Snopes' isn't a group or a research facility. It's a man & his wife, & they have very little in the way of research matierial. They can generally research an urban legend or a rumor and pinpoint it, but for anything else--particularly anything historical--they simply aren't competent.
