Now legal in Bavaria, too

Got today the answer from the "Bavaria Historical Department". It's like I thought. You are allowed to use metal detectors and to dig, if the ground you are searching on is not called a historical monument. If it is a historical monument you are not allowed to metal detect, to dig or even to search with your eyes for any finds...
You have to let the local historical department know about your finds, so they are able to judge if the ground is maybe a unknown historical monument. That's it. So you are generally free to metal detect in Bavaria... But do not forget to ask the owner of the property first. That's some good news for me, as now I am able to start hunting for relics in Bavaria, too.

@Mike: They told me that my first letter got lost, because they moved.

It's great to find out news like that, as it gives you good direction on where you can hunt without being concerned about whether it's OK or not. I've had folks suggest to me, that some sites which are really hot, could be hunted, if I jumped a fence and kept an eye out for security while I hunted. I couldn't think of a worse way to hunt than that. Even if you never got caught, you would have that noring feeling in your stomach all the time. I'd rather simply ask permission. It's a good feeling when approached by a security guard, to know that you are allowed to be there; and I have been approached on a number of occasions.
May your hunts be long and productive.
Mick Evans.

Good news for you, it's an old country, should be some fantastic old finds to make. I hear you can't use a metal detector in Mexico. Is that true ? I'm not too far from Mexico and there are a few good beaches that I know would give up some good finds if hunted.

Good hunting, John K

I am curious, did that information come from the Schweinfurt Landkreis or Wurzburg Denkmalshuetzamt? I will be in Schweinfurt on 14 April for 3 days on business. Here is my email Espy@beer.com, send me an email and I hope we can get out for an evening detecting. 15 April will be the target date to get out detecting so I can find a nice field for us to detect, will probably be a field in Geldersheim. HH, Mike

Hi Mike,

The 15th of April sounds fine to me, for some evening detecting. Hopefully the weather will change back to spring, as we had a lot of snow in the last couple of days (not that the snow stayed on the ground, but enough to keep you away from detecting). You find the field (and a land owner that allows us to detect) and I bring a copy of that letter with me. By the way its form the W
