Now I've gone and done it <>>>>>><<<<<<>..

I opened up my Silver Sabre uMax and ground balanced it.

That was easy. It was a little negative for the ground around here.

But then, I said to my self,

" Self, Just go ahead and slap that little switch in there "

Took about ten minures to void my warranty.

Now I don't gotta hold down that red button.:wiggle:

Happy Hunting,

Well if youre happy, Im ecstatic. I prefer to have the button, myself. But I know the switch is worth it, if you are a heavy AM user.
What wold really be cool is to put a trigger switch on for the AM/pinpoint function and add a GB pot where the button is. Sort of a Tejon Lite.

I adjusted the internal ground pot. on my Silver Sabre today as well, I don't think that it made any difference in performance. I adjusted it a bit positive then a bit negative then neutral. I feel that the manual ground balance thing is over rated. When I get something in my head I usually end up doing it- I have been throwing the idea around in my head about adding a 10 turn 50k ohm pot. during the winter months - it will make me a good project. Even though I feel the manual g.b. is over rated I will feel better just knowing that I can adjust it. If I do the mod. I probably will add a spring loaded toggle switch under the control housing like on the Tejon. I enjoy tinkering with electronics. Yeah yeah I know that I could damage my detector but feel that I can do it with no problems, it isn't that hard of a mod. Steve.

You must have ideal ground conditions for preset ground balance. The ground here is virtually mineral free, so much so that, except for a Gold Mountain King Cobra that was actually balanced too negative, every preset ground balance detector I've had was ground balanced way too positive, three were preset so positive they wouldn't detect half dollars and quarters. My A & S Treasure Baron was so positive I had to go from a 500 ohm pot to a 5k to get it to balance anywhere near neutral. Forty miles northeast of here, in northwest Alabama, it's just the opposite. There's some red dirt over there that has so much mineralization a preset ground balanced detector will barely detect a coin lying on top of the ground. You're fortunate that preset ground balanced detectors work well in your ground:).

That sounds challanging JB.

I am fortunate that most pre-set metal detectors work well here in most places.

It took me a long time to realize why I couldnt find much in some ground.

There are places where I can walk 10' and my MD will go nuts until I adjust the GB.

I now have two with MGB and two that are factory pre-set.

The Silver Sabre uMax is more sensative to ground changes than the Compadre.

The Compadre seems to adjust to ground the way it adjust to most hunting

conditions.

My Compadre went out!!!

I'm going to send it in, but I went ahead and ordered one from Richard at Bk

Woods Detectors.

Now I'll Have one with a 7" coil and one with a 5.75" coil.

I can do a comparison.

Happy Hunting,

Tabdog

Tab, I think you'll be very pleased with the switch. I often run mine in AM with the disc set to accept nickels and toggle in and out to determine whether it's a likely coin or not. Or, sometimes I'll run the disc. way up and cherry pick running in AM and toggle over to see whether or not I lose the signal.
