Now I know why I need some real headphones!

First off, my east Texas old house shakedown trip had to be cancelled.. Naturally I needed some sort of detecting 'fix'!! A buddy and I decided to hit a local swim beach to see what might be left from the summer. This beach is REALLY trashy with pulltabs a go-go and bottlecaps, etc to keep a person really busy!! I used my new 6" HF coil to see how it would do with all that trash, and while slow, it was really great to pull coins from such close proximity to tabs! As I was moving along I got a real faint signal through the little earbud 'phone' I use. I know it's not the best but it is light and was cheap! Anyway, considering how faint the signal was, and what it turned out to be, I now wonder what I may have missed previously!?!? I'll be getting a nice set of headphones asap...

Good for you man, I've got a cheepee set and may upgrade in the spring. They do the job though.

I've got some Gray Ghost Black Widows and when i first got them i didn't like them because they were so tight however since i got use to them now i really like them.
When i put them on the world goes away and all of the outside noises go away -- waves, kids, cars, construction. The snug fit makes them quiet.
I have three different sets of headphones and keep going back to the Black Widows. I know there are a lot of other good headphones out there.

I got my 5X10" from Matt today, very impressed with the air tests, can't wait to try it out. HH John

John, I am getting one next month too. The 5x10" HF DD has a both a longer and wider field than the knife blade narrower width field of the 6" HF DD. So the 5x10" is not as good of separation as the 6", but close and still very good.

Why is Minelab wrong and why does Minelab say this below: When the 6 Double-D is better for target separation?

X-Terra coils.... water proof vs water resistant......from Minelab USA

6 Concentric
7.5 kHz Coil
All X-TERRA series detectors
Water proof
If there are coins and relics hiding amongst iron junk, this coil is the one that will find them. The best X-TERRA coil for target separation.

6 Double-D
18.75 kHz Coil
X-TERRA 50, 70, 305, 505 and 705 detectors
Water proof
The most sensitive X-TERRA coil available, it is great for sub-gram nuggets, specimens, and gold jewellery. Also ideal for shallow streams.

10 x 5 Double-D
18.75 kHz Coil
X-TERRA 50, 70, 305, 505 and 705 detectors
Water resistant
This coil has great sensitivity, good ground coverage, and is easy to use in rough terrain. An ideal gold hunting coil, that also performs well for beach work.

Six inch has smaller footprint than the 10 and 10.5

Exactly! The reason for DD coils is primarily for detecting in highly mineralized soils. The design of the windings counter-balance the effcts of high mineralization much better than the concentrics. One of the "side benefits" is the fact that the detection pattern is centralized down the middle of the coil. (the back to back arrangement of the D's) This narrower detection pattern allows for better target separation. Concentric coils have a broader detection pattern representing the magnetic field between the outer transmit windings and the inner receive windings. DD coils do a good job of separating targets that are "to the right or to the left" of the primary target. But in the real world, there is just as likely a chance of having adjacent targets toward the tip or heel of the coil. Kind of depends on which direction you were walking when you passed over the targets. The smaller footprint of the 6-inch DD coil reduces the chances of having mulitple targets under the coil at any one time. Plainly stated, small coils analyze a lesser volume of ground (than larger coils) with each sweep. JMHO HH Randy

Exactly! I noticed that I'd get good signals mixed with bad pretty often on that beach. When I'd try a different direction I could usually isolate the good signal amongst the trash. This was usually done by wiggling the coil and only moving it a slight amount in any one direction. I experimented with this and managed to pull a quarter from between a pull tab and some foil junk. I really don't care to dig everything, but whenever I get a new coil I do it anyway just so I can figure out if it's telling me the same thing as the others and generally how it 'sees' stuff in the ground. So far I really like this little coil! I don't know that it will replace my 5x10 for the bulk of my hunting, but it will most certainly be riding along for those times when I find myself in a trash pit!

Very nice ring,

I know one thing, What type of headphones you use can make a big difference between hearing a signal or not.
