Now I hear it, now I don't, question on the XT70...

This little problem happens on occasion, I find a target, good VDI and tone, dig, rescan hole, target gone, no tone, no VDI but wait, there is a coin in front of my face in the bottom of the hole. What gives? I have learned to work around the problem using my pinpointer when this happens but it is aggrivating. Any suggestions/help? I typically detect in AM, no disc, sens up around 26-27 and dig everything but iron. The 1669 coin I found the other day VDIed at 8 and the possible Bracteat coin hit at 10. HH, Mike

hi mike i have the same problem. i guess we will just have to live with it. it gets the target but is slow to get it the second time.

at least once everytime I detect with every detector I own. When I first started detecting I thought I was dealing with false signals and didn't keep searching until I found the target. Probably due to the target losing its aura. Another reason air testing means only your detector is working.

Everytime I open a hole, I switch to Prospecting mode. There is minimal reset time, you can size the target and it don't fade like the Pinpoint mode does. HH Randy

So, one way to go would be to get a target, pinpoint it, open the hole, then switch to Prospecting mode to make sure there is no other targets in the hole after recovery. Because, it seems to me that if you cannot detect the target you can already see, then rechecking the hole after recovery might not find a target under that, that was being masked. But, if the prospecting mode can indeed see a little deeper, you should be able to find the masked target (if there is one). Hope that makes sense.

Hi all and thanks for the responses! Depth does not seem to play a role when this phenomena happens, I have had it happen when the coin was right on top of the surface after digging it out. And now that I think about it, seems like it only happens when it is a coin and a certain type coin, copper nickel, many coins I dig here are smaller than American coins but that really has nothing to do with the equation. As mentioned by JohnA, could be the loss of aura or what I call the halo effect. I have never tried prospecting mode thinking all metal mode with the settings I use would be much better and I have found some targets that have been ridiculously deep (14

Hi Mike,

Based on the targets you're finding, the detector is working fine. So my first thought would be that you are using the tracking mode for ground balance. The Xterras, and most other auto GB machines, can sometimes balance out a target after repeated sweeps and you will no longer hear it. Next time this happens try moving a foot or two away from the target and reset the ground balance and then sweep the target again. I have only had this happen to me with small items, i.e. nuggets, so this might explain why it is only happening with certain size coins.

I hardly ever (never) use Pinpoint mode. If it is a single target, I simply X over it from several directions. If I lose it, I find it with Prospecting mode. If there are multiple targets to begin with, or if I am trying to determine the size or shape of a suspect target, I use Prospecting Mode to pinpoint. If that is the case, there is no switching back and forth. The thing to keep in mind is that the Prospecting mode is the only true "all metal" mode on the X-70. All Metal in the Coin/Treasure mode is a zero discrimination mode. HH Randy

check to make sure your Threshold isn't set too high. By "too high", I mean any higher than the minimum required to just barely hear it. Truly on the "threshold" of an audible tone. Anything higher can cause those small targets to be overlooked. And as Tom indicated, tracking can actually "track out" a target, thinking it is part of the ground matrix. Particularly when you sweep repeatedly over the same spot. JMHO HH Randy

I do not ever turn on tracking and hope this is not the case, it is possible as I go through the settings occasionally and maybe just happened to turn on that feature. I will swing over a target several times and do not want any discrimination at all most of the time I detect. I'll check and make sure I do not have the tracking mode on accidentally. Thanks for the answers all and HH, Mike

The following post is about two years old. I specifically wrote the post to generate a discussion to consider more about how current motion ground balancing VLF technology works.

Holes in certain soil matrix types have the same effect, because the ground balancing system is looking at a large volume of soil with an air space in the middle of it.
