And here's my latest experimenting on getting those deeper on edge Canadian clads:

Was tinkering around with my Eldorado umax and noticing that when properly ground balanced the Eldo picks up Ca clad on edge in all metal with no problem. But, in disc, there is a loss in depth and or they are discriminated out unless you drop the disc setting lower than anyone likes.....
Tinkering I found I can get increased depth in both modes on those coins on edge. With a few adjustments the Eldo will pick up a coin on edge as strong as lying flat.
The key factor is your threshold setting. If you set the threshold for the normal, slight sound and ground balance normally, sensitivity 5 to 10. You are now using and tuning the Eldo per the users manual. No worries for US hunter but, not optimum for modern Canadian claddage.
Here's the trick, ground balance like you would normally, then it's time to reset your threshold. You need to pay attention to your threshold sound. There are two thresholds, one I will call your obvious one you will hear while tuning and then there's one I will call the sub threshold. You will hear the under lying tone that is a very very faint buzzing sound. You can only hear it when you back off the threshold knob very slowly to the point the regular threshold goes silent. I remember reading something about the sub threshold years ago by those experienced in using the Tejon for relic hunting in the US getting better depth. Anyway, once the threshold is backed off until you hear the sub threshold, do an air test. You might see that you get the results I do, an inch or so increase in all metal depth of the clad on edge or flat with no loss of depth. Then switch to disc. mode and you'll find you get the same results with no loss of depth over all metal mode. The clad will now hit harder, at depth compared to silver coins. I'll venture to guess this will work with all Tesoro umax units that have threshold control and manual ground balance that ties in with all metal mode and disc. mode.
Now here are my other settings that you can try after tuning like the above method:
Sensitivity 5-10 usual, better depth in boost zone if you can run it that high.
Disc. setting just above iron, set disc control so a clad dime is still detected on edge as lying flat.
If your bold enough, try hunting with zero disc, wire and nails should give a double blip.
Hope this helps you Canuk Eldo umax owners, which is a great detector for hunting here in Canada to begin with.
