Now all I need is a handle

After limited success during my hunt today, I was beginning to wonder if another looter had beaten me to my spot. My "find of the day" confirmed that suspicion. Kept hunting and hoping to find the detector too but no luck. I'm not too bummed though. The way things are going on e-bay I figure all I have to do is attach the words "vintage", "metal detecting" and "gold" and I could probably clear a cool $ 50.00 or so at auction for this "one of a kind beauty". I'm offering pre-auction discounts to forum members. Anyone ?

Hi Scott,

I read your last ebay email and have been following you're posts. WOW! You are really off to a good start with the jewelry! I am glad you are doing well. I am ready to cry as we are getting more snow! I'd bet you a $100 if I did not have my new M6 here ready to go, Spring would be here early and it would be good now to get out and do some hunting. But no, since I have the M6 many areas around here are setting new snow fall records for the month. So everyone should blame me! LOL!

Kidding aside, the nice weather will be here soon enough. So I will sit back and enjoy reading yours and everyone elses post for now and just stay psyched. Good hunts and keep it up!

Talk to you soon,

Jim

PS - I looked up your shovel and it appears to be a variety made in China that was brought here and used by the early Chinese miners in the 1840's. Legend has it that the handles continued to break to the point that the Chinese immigrants gave up mining and pursued careers in laundry and restaurants along the West Coast. So maybe it's worth a bit more on ebay :)

Gosh OC, but that looks like a modern day garden trowel, although a wide one. Maybe 4" across the end. Looks like the wooden handle probably split and the owner left it laying. 150+ year old shovel would be far rustier than that.

The Chinese miners of the gold rush were far more careful when they panned out their finds and therefore found more gold. Many were killed for their gold, because the other miners were jealous and greedy. Outlaws also shared a role, because nobody would care if a foreigner turned up missing back in those days. JMO.

Take care, Dave

Hey Jim, Good to hear from you. I don't mean to kick you when you're down but I had to put sunscreen on today. If you're not sure what that is, you can google it. JK Your PS was hilarious. Your "historical info " should help stir up the bidding into a frenzy. It's not too late to snap this up before I offer it to the masses. All kidding aside, thanks for the kudos. I know the hunting that I've been doing is relatively simple compared to the searches and recoveries that you guys have made ( I've been reading critterhunters posts on some of his and your (?) finds) but it's still a lot of fun and it works for me for now. I'm trying to strengthen all of my detecting skills so I can work my way up to some of those incredible deep silver coin finds that you guys make. Sincere thanks for all the advice and support. As you can see it's paying off. I'm just enjoying the ride. Hopefully you can get out soon and season that M6 in battle. I'm sure the finds are going to be great. Can't wait to see them. Hang in there and HH.

I was just making a joke on Scotts comment. Plus, cabin fever is getting to me as I haven't seen the sun for awhile. It's always cloudy here!:lmfao:

I was using the Explorer II at the time. Now I plan on nothing but gold jewelry hunting this year and I sure missed using the White's!

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about! It's 10 pm and I was getting ready to crash but your find got me fired up to hit it again. If only my MXT and QXT came with a backlight... and coffeemaker.

OC, Well I wondered if you were talking about this picture or perhaps one on a different post. I guess I have been looking at too many whatsits, as I try to solve all the mysteries of the universe. Your forecast is just about a carbon copy of mine, and the extended forecast for the following week isn't any different either. This will be my 7th season as a Treasure Hunter and it looks to be the first time that I haven't gotten out at least once in January or February. Good Luck, guys.

OC, Dave et al,
All of you need to make a road trip out here and start hunting. I'd jump at the opportunity to go hunt with somebody (anybody !) that understands just how insanely fun this is. Everyone around here just thinks I'm insane, period. They all give me a wide berth when I'm brandishing my MXT or QXT. I guess I don't fit into what they think is "cool" anymore. ( Cool is VERY big in CA, common sense, respect and character unfortunately are not ) I was actually born in Cook County, Illinois but moved here before I was two years old. Oh well, I'm glad to be a duck out of water so to speak, cuz this ducks pond is never frozen ! I'm not trying to rub it in, I really sympathize. I hope my modest little hunting stories are helping to get you through this torture. Very busy this week but I'll try to get out so I can post any good finds to help you through. HH

It looks like a modern day garden implement called a garden trowel it most likely got thrown away when it broke because it was made in CHINA!!!! LOL:beers:
