Can I say four simple words? I will say it, "I love the Tejon!" I went back on my fifth trip to the farm up in Richmond (Cold Harbor Area)
and scored very well! My buddy Joe and I set out on a breezy cool fall day to get a hunt in before the Nor'Easter hit on Tuesday.
We arrived at 0800 and hit the feilds for an all day hunt. This time I only took my Tejon and left my White's XLT and Minelab Explorer II at home. Joe uses a Minelab Explorer XS.
The morning started off slow, but soon picked up. I hit a small ridge line that I have never hunted and boy the minnies started popping like candy. I hunted an area probally 50x50 and scored 10 minnies in about 45 minutes up to depths of 8" measured with strong signals. The ground was leaves, small roots, then the typical Richmond gray loom (where most target lay from the CW era). After that I went back to the big field to save the woods for later in the winter after the farmer puts down his winter cover crop.
I saw Joe hunting the pasture area saw I went over to tell him about the wood line. No sooner than I walked up to him, the Tejon screamed!
I asked him to go over the target area and he did. "Sounds like a shot gun shell." "Really?" I had a different pop, so I dug it and out popped brass. I was the part of the rifle that wraps around the wood where the end of the ram rod would set. Nice!
After that we headed to a corner of the feild and scored!
Joe found 16 minies and a 1832 half dime
I found 25 minnies, 1852 3 cent piece, Hotckiss fuse dated 1862 (Great find) and the gun part.
I morale to the story is that I am now pulling away from the Minelabs at a rate that proves to me the tejon, in the right hands, will out perform the high end machines. In two hunts, I have beat the Minelab Explorer S and XS hands down. Now, Eric with the White's MXT is a different customer. He has out performed me every hunt so far, but I feel ready to take him on again which I will this Monday at a new farm that we have never hunted, so we should be equally matched. I will post results.
P.S.
I have cleaned some of my finds from our last couple of hunts at the Richmond farm and some are still as they were coming out of the ground, my brother is coming by this week and he will download my pics and I will post. Thanks for viewing and Happy Thanksgiving to all! HH
