Noticed minelab on ebay went super high with the new ctx3030 coming out. I still like my xs though

Hi everyone,

Its funny how much stuff has went on ebay from minelab users since the new ctx3030 is available. I'm still super impressed with my old explorer xs that I have got down to a science. I have found many silver dimes and coins at depths some people dont see possible. I have also pulled coins out of holes with rusty nails right next to the coins with programs I had gathered in the past off the internet. I just recently went to a park last week with my buddy using his sov gt and made him mad lol! I just recently got back into detecting after a couple years and got my good ole explorer xs back after having to sell my last one to pay medical bills. I was pretty familiar with everything but still had a few things that had to be refreshed. I was detecting and kept getting signals that I thought for sure must be fooling me because the depth meter was buried and the signal was faint. I had my buddy who had his sov gt come over to confirm what he thought. He went over the target and couldnt get anything, so he cranked his sensitivity up all the way and put it in all metal and couldnt get anything either. He told me its probably just trash or something that he was not getting any signal. I kept getting the target pretty good so I started digging. Well after about ten inches I tried to get the signal and was barely getting it. I told him to come over with his sunray probe to see if he could get it, he had it in discriminate and checked the hole and looked surprised when he got a faint signal with the probe. He told me where to scoop dirt so I took another scoop and saw a sweet sight, a silver lying at an angle about two inches under where he told me to dig deeper. He looked at me with a mad face and told me I sucked lol! Turned out to be a worn 1918 merc. The deepest and most surprising find I had was at a park we had found tons of silvers, wheats, and indians. I had just barely got my first explorer xs right after they came out and learned it pretty well. I got a signal pretty faint and sounded like silver so I dug it. After digging to my elbow I thought for sure it must be a pop can or something because it kept coming in fairly good. I had the x1 probe on that one and probed the hole and after another 1/4" I pulled out a 1908-O barber that looked like it came straight from the mint. I could not beleive how deep this sucker was it had to be at least 14 or 15" deep and I have never used any coil other than the stock 10.5" coil. This is not in sand either, so even thought all these new machines have come out I will still take my explorer out. Knowledge and know how always beats technology in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing haha.

[size=large]it seems the manufacturers are following the trend of the auto-makers. it's not how well the engine is made it's how many gadgets can they put in them. the new ml has gps and remote headsets and maybe you can have your smart phone connected with a new app. just call from autralia to france and ask someone for a new gold enhancement program to be wired to ya. call for a pizza instead of breaking for lunch.

Minelab makes great products, but I'm not buying into all of the hype with the new model. Aside from not being able to afford it, I do just fine with my Explorer anyways. "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it" !!

I saw the new 3030 at the Atlantic City hunt this weekend where the price was announced by Minelabs VP.Not only is the machine a little on the heavy side(although it is well balanced)so is the price(I thought). The gps is a great feature which will keep you from covering the same ground over and over again and can be overlaid on google maps so you can see `patterns` or `hot spots`where youre hunting. And yes,it seems as though the modest metal detector is going the way of the cell phone--soon well probably be able to hear our favorite tune in the background instesd of the buzz of the threshold..(oops,I just gave them an idea for the 2nd generation 3030).It seems as though your basic metal detector will soon be a thing of the past. But who knows ,maybe Ill enjoy watching`I Love Lucy`reruns on my detector screen between signals..For me,,just give me a little more depth and a lighter machine than the original explorer and Ill be happy. The more toys=a longer learning curve, more weight and more $$$.Keep it simple, deep and light..Ralph

Good points. If I may add my two cents on this I'd say consider a coil change on your Explorer before feeling the need to upgrade to another machine. If there is any better separation or depth I think there is a good chance with the right aftermarket coil on another Minelab such as the 12x10 or 13" Ultimate that MIGHT make up any difference in need to buy another machine, as both coils are said by some to be deeper than stock. The 12x10 has excellent separation abilities due to it's unique shape that compresses the width of the detection line, and the 13" Ultimate sounds like it has some unique unmasking abilites of it's own. I know the 12x10 on my Minelab has made me able to see any super deep or badly masked coins just as well as my friend's flagship model, and we've been comparing a bunch of targets prior to digging that has proven that for me. I'm very happy and see no need to upgrade to something else. I feel the 12x10 has made the difference for me. These Explorers, Etracs, and GTs are so maxed out in VLF field strength/technology and ground handling capabilites that I think the coil is the real key for the most part to see any big improvements in depth or separation ability of one over the other. My friend has been rather shocked that my "lowly" model is holding it's own so far on all the super deep or badly masked signals he's had me check. I must admit I'm kind'a shocked myself. I'm glad, because while I could afford a new coil it would be rather hard to swing the price on another machine right now.

Consider a coil change on your Explorer or other Minelbs before feeling the need to step up to something else. If it works it's a lot cheaper than buying another machine. Did for me.

ERA SNIOC DLEII tend to agree...For years I bought the latest coils , latest detectors, always trying to get that extra edge...And sometimes it worked.. But this old xs I bought used has made me a believer in Minelabs. I like simple .. and the xs is a pretty simple machine that gives me what I want... I only wish my xs had the balance and weight of my dfx... I thought of making a hybred of the two.. to me that would be the ultimate machine.. deep .. easy ..and light... But for now I'll keep swinging my tank of an explorer xs .. except on farm fields..then the dfx wins do to weight alone :). Most of our field coins are shallow anyways...so I don't feel I am missing much..
